These days, Phu Tho is adorned with banners, flags, and slogans celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024) and the 35th anniversary of the National Defense Day (December 22, 1989 - December 22, 2024). Joining the group of visitors touring the Hung Vuong Museum, we listened as tour guide Nguyen Thi Nhan provided a detailed introduction to the valuable documents, images, and artifacts from the resistance wars in the homeland of the Hung Kings.

Stories from the museum

Students from Tan Dan Secondary School in Viet Tri City visited and studied history at the Hung Vuong Museum.

During the resistance war against French colonialism (1945-1954), Phu Tho served as both a direct rear base for the Northwest and Viet Bac regions and the site of numerous campaigns with glorious victories such as the Lo River, Tu Vu, and Tram Than campaigns. In the Dien Bien Phu Campaign of 1954, the people and army of Phu Tho proudly made significant contributions alongside the rest of the country to the historic Dien Bien Phu victory. During the resistance war against American imperialism, with the spirit of "all for the front lines, all to defeat the American invaders," Phu Tho mobilized its maximum human and material resources to support the southern front lines, making important contributions to the struggle for independence, the liberation of the South, and the reunification of the country.

At the Hung Vuong Museum's exhibition system, thousands of artifacts are presented in a modern, scientific , and diverse manner, utilizing advanced technology. Many of these artifacts and documents are from the resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism. The exhibition space displays images, documents, and historical artifacts about the glorious battles fought by the army and people of Phu Tho, leading to victories at the Song Lo, Tu Vu, and Tram Than rivers, transporting people and tourists back to the past. In the autumn and winter of October 1947, the French were preparing to attack Viet Bac with unprecedented modern forces, including 20,000 elite troops, 800 motorized vehicles, 40 aircraft, and 40 boats and warships. The French advanced up the Song Lo River, determined to conquer Viet Bac from the gateway of Doan Hung, Phu Tho, but were completely defeated by the strength of our army and people. The victory at Song Lo thrilled the entire nation, breaking the French pincer movement encircling the Viet Bac base in the west.

Having the opportunity to see and rediscover historical artifacts in the exhibition space of the Hung Vuong Museum, veteran Lai The Ky from Chi Dam commune, Doan Hung district, shared his feelings as if reliving a glorious era of the nation: “The glorious past has now become a strength and a symbol of the national cultural tradition. As an older generation, I am truly happy to witness the image of today's young generation returning to their roots, witnessing firsthand the heroic struggle of their ancestors through each artifact and image displayed at the Museum.”

Precious historical artifacts such as: Tank No. 377 of the T54 type, MIG aircraft with designations 5023 and 5057, French colonial ships sunk by our troops, and the collection of memorabilia of People's Armed Forces Heroes Le Quang Bien (Lien Phuong commune, Ha Hoa district), Hoang Van Luong (Tan Phu commune, Tan Son district), and Bui Dinh Cu (Tu Xa commune, Lam Thao district)... are highlights of the Museum. In the outdoor exhibition area, two MIG aircraft with designations 5023 and 5057 of the 921 Sao Do Air Regiment (Vietnam's first fighter air regiment) that took off in the skies of Hanoi - Phu Tho to protect their beloved homeland still stand tall and proud, bearing the mark of many resounding victories and the achievements of People's Armed Forces Heroes Ngo Duy Thu and Pham Phu Thai. Aircraft 5057, piloted by Comrade Ngo Duy Thu, shot down 4 American aircraft (3 F4s and 1 F105); aircraft 5023, piloted by Comrade Pham Phu Thai, shot down 4 American F4s.

Duong Thu Ngan, a student at Hung Vuong University, shared: “The exhibits at the museum are an opportunity for today's young generation to better understand history and the sacrifices of our ancestors. From there, we can further appreciate, cherish, and promote the precious traditions of our nation through each document, artifact, and image displayed here.”

The war is long over, but each artifact, document, and memento of the soldiers carries its own story. Displayed respectfully at the Hung Vuong Museum, it not only reminds succeeding generations of a glorious and heroic period in the nation's history but also conveys a message from previous generations to future generations about patriotism and the struggle to defend the country.
