Messi's former club is in a precarious situation. |
Newell's Old Boys, Lionel Messi's childhood club, is currently on the verge of bankruptcy. In an interview with Zapping Sport , president Ignacio Boero frankly admitted that the club's financial situation is alarming.
"There's no more money. Newell's is financially exhausted and on the verge of bankruptcy. In the last four years, the debt has tripled," Boero stated.
The head of the Argentinian football club said Newell's is burdened with debts of between $30 and $35 million , while directly blaming the previous management.
Boero took over the club after the elections at the end of 2025 and now faces extremely difficult challenges both on and off the pitch. According to him, Newell's is not only sinking deeper into financial crisis but also declining professionally.
To salvage the situation, the new management was forced to seek external investment and consider selling players if suitable offers were received.
"They left us with a team on the brink of relegation. If there is a truly economically beneficial offer for the club and we can find a replacement, Newell's will sell the player," the club chairman affirmed.
The team is currently managed by coach Frank Dario Kudelka and is struggling in the relegation battle in the Argentine league. They are second to last in Group A and have only earned 15 points after 16 matches.
