Brazilian football has just seen a noteworthy incident unfolding hours after coach Carlo Ancelotti announced the 26-player squad for the 2026 World Cup. Midfielder Danilo, one of the players called up, is currently experiencing significant tension with his club, Botafogo.
According to Brazilian media, Danilo requested not to play in the match against Corinthians in the Brazilian league last weekend for personal reasons. However, the real reason is believed to be that the midfielder, born in 2001, wanted to avoid playing further matches to prepare for his plan to leave Botafogo after the World Cup.
Danilo has already played 12 matches for Brasileirão this season. If he plays one more game, he will be barred from playing for any other club in the Brazilian Serie A for the remainder of the season. This is believed to be the reason why he refused to participate against Corinthians.
Botafogo's reaction was very firm. The team decided to exclude Danilo from the away trip to Paraguay to face Independiente Petrolero in the Copa Sudamericana. The club's management also removed the midfielder from first-team training sessions.
Danilo's future is becoming a hot topic in Brazil. Palmeiras, his former club where he grew up, is considered the most likely destination. Palmeiras previously submitted an offer worth €20 million plus €5 million in add-ons, but it was rejected by Botafogo.
Besides Palmeiras, Flamengo is also interested in Danilo. The midfielder still has a contract with Botafogo until 2029 but has not ruled out the possibility of returning to Europe. Danilo previously played for Nottingham Forest after a €20 million transfer from Palmeiras in January 2023. Botafogo is expected to spend €23 million to bring him back to Brazil in July 2025.
While his future at club level remains uncertain, Danilo continues to enjoy the trust of Carlo Ancelotti. The 25-year-old midfielder is included in the Brazilian squad preparing for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
According to local media, Danilo's chances of continuing to play for Botafogo before joining the Brazilian national team are almost nonexistent.
