Pursuing the profession of braiding hair in the traditional African style, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Ha (nicknamed Ha Nguyen, residing in Ho Chi Minh City) says she has earned an income of about 30-35 million VND per month. At its peak, her income could reach nearly 70 million VND.

Reportedly, the price for each braided hairstyle ranges from 500,000 VND to 4 million VND, depending on the complexity of the hairstyle and the customer's requirements.
To create a perfect cornrow hairstyle (a traditional African braided hairstyle), Ms. Ha first checks the client's hair quality, including its thickness, length, and density. Based on this, she advises on hairstyles that suit the client's hair type and intended use.
"Many hairstyles are only suitable for photoshoots and not for strenuous activities, so before scheduling an appointment, I always find out about the client's needs to make appropriate suggestions," Ms. Ha shared.
Ms. Ha jokingly said that this is a profession for people with OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder for perfection). Because, in addition to skillful hands, a hair braider must be meticulous and focused on every single detail.

Ms. Ha uses a special gel to apply to the hair strands, helping them stick together and prevent them from frizzing during the styling process. In addition, hair clips, combs, and hair ties are essential tools. (Photo: Binh Minh)
"The most difficult and important part is the hair parting process. A beautiful cornrow requires perfectly straight lines. If even one strand is out of place, I have to start drawing the line all over again," Ms. Ha said.
It is this meticulousness that means Ms. Ha usually spends at least two hours completing a cornrow hairstyle. For more difficult styles, she may even spend over ten hours.
In 2016, Ms. Ha was selling brocade items at fairs. One day, while knitting bracelets, she suddenly thought of attaching the yarn to her hair as an accent.
After some time, as social media gradually developed, Ms. Ha learned about the cornrow hairstyle. At that time, this hairstyle was still unfamiliar in Vietnam, so she researched and learned more from videos on the Internet, and then practiced on her friends' hair.

"In the early days of my career, I often braided hair for free for friends or those who bought my brocade products. People in Ho Chi Minh City are people who like to try new things, so when they saw my unusual hairstyles, they would ask each other about them and then come to me. From then on, I started to have more customers and completely switched to this profession," Ms. Ha recalled.
According to Ms. Ha, this hairstyle is not only suitable for artists and those working in performing arts, but is also popular among young people with strong personalities who want to have an impressive appearance.
For her, the satisfaction of customers after getting their hair done is what makes her happiest and motivates her to strive to improve her skills every day.
As a long-time regular customer of Ms. Ha's hair salon, Mr. Nguyen Minh Thien (33 years old, choreographer) doesn't remember when he started coming here. Whenever he needs to perform or do a photoshoot, he always stops by Ms. Ha's salon to get different hairstyles.
"The hairstyles that Ms. Ha did for me made me feel cooler, more handsome, and more confident when performing on stage," Thien said.
Cornrow is a traditional African braided hairstyle, considered a symbol of pride for the people there. The characteristic of this hairstyle is that each strand of hair is braided evenly on both sides, close to the scalp, forming a straight, curved, or spiral parting.
