Preserving native pepper varieties
Mr. Truong Van Dung's household (Tien Trang village, Son Cam Ha commune) is cultivating 100 Tien Phuoc pepper plants on an area of approximately 1 sao (approximately 1000 square meters), using a completely organic production process. The pepper garden has been yielding harvests for over 10 years, producing 70-90 kg annually. With the current market price of around 500,000 VND/kg, his family earns approximately 45 million VND per year.
Mr. Dung stated that Tien Phuoc pepper is quite famous, but bringing the product to market still faces many difficulties, mainly being sold through small traders in local markets.
"Receiving geographical indication status is something that pepper growers in Tien Phuoc have long awaited, so that their product can be protected in terms of branding and its reputation can be affirmed in the market," Mr. Dung said.
In Son Cam Ha commune, Mr. Ho Van Ky, Director of Son Tien Co., Ltd., is a pioneer in investing in pepper cultivation on a scale of over 3 hectares with a modern irrigation system.
Mr. Ky said that in 2019, his family invested more than 1.5 billion VND to plant 7,000 pepper vines in Hamlet 3. Simultaneously, he actively collaborated with and purchased pepper from farmers in Tien Phuoc, Lanh Ngoc, Thanh Binh, and Son Cam Ha communes to build a brand and diversify products made from pepper.
“Over the past time, the authorities at all levels have accompanied and supported Tien Phuoc pepper growers a great deal, from providing financial support through policies to develop garden-based economic activities to building OCOP products, promoting trade, and expanding consumption markets. This is an important prerequisite for Tien Phuoc pepper to have a foothold in the market and increase income from their own gardens,” Mr. Ky shared.
Geographical indications are considered an important prerequisite for Tien Phuoc pepper to enhance its value and gradually access foreign markets. However, the majority of pepper cultivation is still carried out by small-scale farmers using traditional techniques, making it difficult to ensure a stable supply.
In addition, the impact of natural disasters and pests also directly affects crop yields. Mr. Thai Cong Bang (Hamlet 4, Tien Phuoc Commune) said that his family is growing about 100 pepper plants, yielding about 100 kg of peppercorns per year. However, the biggest difficulty in expanding production scale is the weather.
“During the dry season, we need to invest in irrigation systems, while during the rainy season, we need to ensure good soil aeration to allow water to drain away and prevent root rot. The time when pepper plants sprout new shoots is in the ninth lunar month, which coincides with the rainy and stormy season in Central Vietnam, directly affecting productivity. Fortunately, the local government has actively provided technical guidance to improve production efficiency and create a clean and safe product line,” Mr. Bang said.
Opportunities to expand into the global market.
On April 29, 2026, the Intellectual Property Office issued Decision No. 179/QD-SHTT granting Certificate of Geographical Indication Registration No. 00152 for the product "Tien Phuoc" pepper. The protected area covers the communes of Tien Phuoc, Lanh Ngoc, Thanh Binh, and Son Cam Ha in Da Nang city.
Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Cam Ha commune, said that the pepper growing area in the commune is currently about 30 hectares, of which about 17.5 hectares are currently being harvested. The recognition of geographical indication is a well-deserved acknowledgment of the efforts and dedication of the people, cooperatives, and businesses, along with the support and attention of all levels and sectors in preserving and promoting the value of this product, which has been associated with the Tien Phuoc region for generations. This is also an opportunity to enhance brand value, increase the competitiveness of the product in the market, and contribute to promoting agricultural economic development, improving people's income and living standards.
“To leverage the value of geographical indications, local authorities will continue to support people in expanding the cultivated area through policies on agricultural production development and garden-based economic development. At the same time, they will promote the application of science and technology, develop production in a sustainable direction; and strengthen trade promotion and expand consumer markets,” Mr. Tuan said.
According to Nguyen Hung Anh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune, Tien Phuoc pepper is an agricultural product that has long been associated with the lives and livelihoods of the people of Tien Phuoc. Tien Phuoc pepper is highly valued by consumers for its distinctive strong aroma and superior quality. In 2009, Tien Phuoc pepper was granted a collective trademark certificate by the Vietnam Intellectual Property Office.
According to assessments by specialized agencies, Tien Phuoc pepper meets and exceeds Vietnamese standards in many aspects, such as Piperin content at 4.03% (Vietnamese standard is 4%); and non-volatile ether extract content at 9.78% (Vietnamese standard is 6%). These are outstanding characteristics that differentiate Tien Phuoc pepper from pepper grown in many other regions.
The People's Committee of Tien Phuoc commune is currently the representative organization of the localities assigned to manage the geographical indication "Tien Phuoc" for pepper products. In the future, the commune government will closely coordinate with localities within the geographical indication area to protect the reputation and quality of the product.
“We will coordinate and work alongside the people, cooperatives, and businesses in identifying model gardens for breeding, building standardized pepper cultivation processes, and ensuring technical requirements are recognized by competent authorities. This will improve quality, diversify products, gradually elevate the brand of Tien Phuoc pepper, and aim for export,” Mr. Hung Anh said.
