The project aims to support 42 smallholder farmers to convert to alternate wetting and drying (AWD) on 50 hectares of rice fields during the April-August 2025 cropping season. AWD is proven to save water and reduce methane emissions by draining the water from the field surface in stages instead of keeping the field continuously flooded.
To increase the effectiveness of the project, the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) management process will be consulted and implemented in the rice cultivation model to control the amount of pesticide residue within the prescribed threshold, in parallel with the AWD technique to help farmers cut 20-30% of costs in a crop, reduce emissions and improve the quality of agricultural products. This smart agricultural method not only helps build a sustainable rice value chain, but also improves farmers' livelihoods by reducing input costs and increasing output prices for rice.
In parallel with the field activities, the program also organizes Community Engagement Workshops for farmers and families. The workshops are a platform to raise awareness about sustainable agriculture, collect feedback from people and jointly develop locally appropriate climate change response solutions.
Mr. Bui Khanh Nguyen, Deputy General Director of External Affairs, Communications and Sustainable Development of Coca-Cola Vietnam Company, shared: “The new factory of Coca-Cola Vietnam Company in Tay Ninh not only brings job opportunities to local people, but also continues to create positive, sustainable values for the community. EkoClimate is one of the typical centers of the EkoCenter community support center network that we are constantly expanding. Through EkoClimate, we expect to bring sustainable solutions to combat climate change and empower the community to develop strongly.”
“Rice farmers are responsible for one of the world’s most important food crops,” said Siem Schreurs, Director of External Affairs at Rize. “Not only do they contribute to the agro-ecosystem, they are also among the most vulnerable to climate change. Supporting farmers is key to building a sustainable and resilient food system in the long term.”
EkoClimate is the latest initiative in the EkoCenter program, a project launched by Coca-Cola Vietnam since 2015. In addition to providing clean drinking water, digital learning opportunities and business skills training for disadvantaged communities, these centers have expanded their role in supporting sustainable development.
The transformation of the EkoCenter model underscores Coca-Cola Vietnam’s long-term vision of creating shared value by addressing local needs and contributing to national development goals. From empowering women, supporting informal waste collectors, increasing access to clean water, to promoting sustainable rice farming, Coca-Cola Vietnam has always put the community at the heart of its development strategy.
