The Vietnamese national team changes their goalkeeping coach.

Goalkeeper coach Lee Woon-jae has said goodbye to the Vietnamese national team. The former South Korean goalkeeper, who played in the 2002 World Cup, only signed a short-term contract with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to work at the 2024 AFF Cup. After the tournament ended, the two sides did not renew the contract. Mr. Lee will return to his home country to prepare for new projects.

Goalkeeper coach Lee Woon-jae has made a strong impression, despite only working with the Vietnamese national team for two months. His strong, decisive coaching style, along with the valuable experience he brings, has helped goalkeepers like Nguyen Filip, Dinh Trieu, and Trung Kien improve.

At the 2024 AFF Cup, Lee Woon-jae and coach Kim Sang-sik alternated between Nguyen Filip and Dinh Trieu in the group stage. Afterward, he and the coaching staff agreed to use Dinh Trieu because the 1992-born goalkeeper communicates better with the defense and has a safe playing style, fitting the defensive tactics that the Vietnamese national team aims for.

After Lee Woon-jae returns home, coach Kim Sang-sik will propose a new goalkeeping coach when the national team enters its new training cycle in preparation for the Asian Cup. Coach Kim's coaching staff still includes Choi Won-kwon, considered the "right-hand man" of the former Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors coach. According to Choi's statements to the media, Coach Kim Sang-sik is the one who paints the big picture, while the assistants' job is to execute the ideas and help the players better understand the tactics.

Since coach Kim Sang-sik came to Vietnam, his coaching staff has undergone many changes. Several assistants have come and gone, such as Lee Woon-jae and Sang Wuk-an (fitness coach). However, Mr. Kim affirms that he is satisfied with the quality of work of his colleagues.

In 2025, the Vietnamese national team will focus on qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup. Coach Kim's team is in the same group as Malaysia, Laos, and Nepal. Vietnam's goal is to win first place to secure a ticket to the finals.
