The transcontinental highway was first proposed by the United States in 1923 at the 5th International Conference of the American States. However, it wasn't until 1937 that a new convention was signed by 14 countries: the United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. The first section in Mexico was completed in the 1950s.
