The Transcontinental Highway was first proposed by the United States in 1923 at the Fifth International Conference of American States. However, it was not until 1937 that a convention was signed by 14 countries including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina. The first section in Mexico was not completed until the 1950s.
