Provincial police dismantle inter-provincial cigarette smuggling ring

On the morning of May 31, the Provincial Police announced that the Economic Police Department in coordination with the Technical Department (Provincial Police) had dismantled a cigarette smuggling ring from Quang Tri province to Dak Lak province.

Through the situation, the Economic Police Department discovered suspicious signs of a large-scale smuggling ring in Buon Ma Thuot City. Immediately after that, the unit established a case to combat smuggling crimes. During the 2 days of May 27-28, the Economic Police Department coordinated with the Technical Department (Provincial Police) to arrest and detain 2 cases, 7 subjects for transporting and trading in long-imported cigarettes, confiscating 8,780 packs of cigarettes; temporarily detaining 1 passenger car, 2 cars, 1 motorbike and many mobile phones.

Specifically, on the afternoon of May 27, the Working Group of the Economic Police Department caught Phan Quang Hung (born in 1975) in village 5 (Cuor Knia commune, Buon Don district) driving a motorbike transporting 3 cardboard boxes containing 2,200 packs of smuggled JET brand cigarettes to deliver to Ms. Nguyen Thi Mo (born in 1953) in Thang Loi ward (Buon Ma Thuot city). Based on Hung's statement, the Working Group searched Ms. Mo's house and continued to seize 220 packs of smuggled "555" brand cigarettes.

On the same day, at the Nam Tay Nguyen gas station on 10/3 Street, Cu Ebur Commune (Buon Ma Thuot City), the Economic Police Department caught Dang Trong Van (born in 1983) in An Quang Hamlet (Tay Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh District, Nghe An Province), the driver of Quang Khanh passenger car, transferring and delivering to Phan Thi Ngoc Hanh (born in 1976), Pham Ngoc Duy (born in 1983) and Nguyen Van Thien (born in 1971), all residing in Buon Ma Thuot City, 8 cardboard boxes containing 5,280 packs of JET brand cigarettes.

According to the suspects' statements, the Economic Police Department also discovered that at the homes of two suspects, Ha Thi Tam (born in 1972) and Nguyen The Lu (born in 1962), also in Buon Ma Thuot City, they were storing 120 packs of smuggled HERO and ESSE brand cigarettes; at the same time, they searched the home of suspect Hanh and discovered and seized 100 packs of Caravena brand cigarettes.

Expanding the fight, on the evening of May 27, the Economic Police Department sent a working group to Quang Tri town (Quang Tri province) to coordinate with Quang Tri Provincial Police to conduct an urgent search and detention of two subjects Nguyen Hong Thang (born in 1975) and Phan Thi Mai Trang (born in 1978), both residing in Quang Tri town. These are the ringleaders who sold smuggled cigarettes to Phan Thi Ngoc Hanh. During the search of Thang and Trang's houses, the authorities seized 800 packs of smuggled JET brand cigarettes.

Initially, the authorities determined that from February 2023 to present, the subjects in this ring have organized the transportation and trading of smuggled cigarettes from Quang Tri province to Dak Lak province; on average, each month, Hanh transported and traded in Dak Lak province about 1 billion VND.

Currently, the Economic Police Department is coordinating with professional units to continue investigating and verifying to clarify the violations of the subjects for handling according to the provisions of law.
