Attending the press conference were Most Venerable Thich Thanh Quyet, Vice President of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Head of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Quang Ninh province, National Assembly Delegate of Quang Ninh province; leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the provinces: Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh and Hai Phong city; leaders of Yen Tu ward and nearly 90 journalists and reporters from central and local press agencies.
At the press conference, the leader of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ninh said that after a long, persistent and arduous journey, on July 12, 2025, the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscape Complex was officially recognized by the World Heritage Committee as a World Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Accordingly, the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac Complex of Monuments and Landscapes is the first chain-type World Cultural Heritage, and the second inter-provincial Heritage among the nine World Heritages of Vietnam recognized by UNESCO.
This recognition is not only a source of pride for the three provinces of Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh and Hai Phong city, but also affirms the unique, vibrant and global value of Truc Lam Buddhism originating from the sacred Yen Tu mountain range.
The process of building the dossier to submit to UNESCO was carried out meticulously and methodically, with the leading role of Quang Ninh and the close coordination of Hai Phong and Bac Ninh.
Many domestic and international conferences and seminars have been organized, gathering the participation of leading domestic and foreign experts, contributing to completing the dossier in a scientific and convincing manner; In particular, in the process of receiving recommendations from the World Heritage Center (UNESCO) and the Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Quang Ninh province has proactively developed and submitted explanatory reports and supplemented information 4 times from November 2024 to June 2025.
Sharing about the arduous 3-month journey to defend the Heritage dossier before the World Heritage Council, Venerable Thich Thanh Quyet, Vice President of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, said that there were many difficulties and concerns, but with great determination, the Vietnamese delegation worked tirelessly, prepared full documents, explained, and answered questions from the Council and experts.
Venerable Thich Thanh Quyet also shared more about the negotiation process with about 20 ambassadors from various countries, who have important voices in protecting the position and role of the sacred Yen Tu mountain range, using documents, historical evidence and cultural values to convince the ambassadors to better understand the stature of Truc Lam Buddhism.
The Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son - Kiep Bac relic and landscape complex was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage according to criteria (iii) and (vi), as evidence for the unique combination between the state, religion and people in the formation of the Vietnamese national identity; along with the sacred landscape formed through frequent and close interactions with nature and an ethical system based on the love of peace, self-cultivation, tolerance, kindness and harmony between humans and nature.
This heritage is a special testament to Truc Lam Buddhism, a cultural tradition of global significance founded by the Tran kings and royal family, especially Buddhist Emperor Tran Nhan Tong, in the 13th century.
This sect has integrated Mahayana Buddhism with Confucianism, Taoist cosmology and indigenous beliefs of the Vietnamese people, creating a tradition that promotes peace, harmony and harmonious coexistence.
UNESCO's recognition not only acknowledges a journey of great effort but also affirms a living cultural and spiritual heritage, bringing unique and lasting contributions to the cultural and spiritual heritage of humanity.
*Tonight, August 17, at Minh Tam Square, Yen Tu Ward, Quang Ninh Province, the Program to announce the World Heritage of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex and the special art program "Yen Tu Sound - A Thousand-Year Heritage" will take place.
The program is organized by the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province in coordination with the People's Committee of Hai Phong city, the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Quang Ninh province.
The program has the participation of more than 700 actors and artists, including many famous singers and artists such as: Thanh Thanh Hien, Ngoc Anh, Thu Hang, Vu Thang Loi, Dong Hung, Tong Xuan Tung, Viet Danh, Soobin Hoang Son; conductor Dong Quang Vinh; Tre Dance Group; along with theaters, art troupes, cultural clubs inside and outside the province.
Immediately after the art program, a high-altitude fireworks display will light up the Yen Tu sky, bringing the audience into a unique cultural and musical space amidst the sacred mountains, where the eternal sounds of heritage echo.
The program to announce the World Heritage of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex is not only an activity to honor the special value of Yen Tu Heritage but also an opportunity to widely promote the image, culture and people of Quang Ninh to domestic and international friends; at the same time, it is an important political event contributing to the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2.
