The cough-relieving properties of essential oils

VnExpressVnExpress04/11/2023

Thyme, lavender, and cinnamon essential oils have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe irritated airways, reduce coughing, and relieve nasal congestion.

Sore throat, colds, and flu are common respiratory illnesses caused by viruses and bacteria. Common symptoms include runny nose, sore throat, cough, and headache.

Essential oils are created by extracting and concentrating oils from plants. The phytochemicals in essential oils offer many health benefits, including cough relief. Some also have antibacterial properties and reduce inflammation caused by respiratory infections.

How to use

Essential oils are often used as aromatherapy. Patients can inhale them directly by opening the bottle and taking 5-10 deep breaths over several minutes. Adults can also put a few drops of essential oil on a soft cloth or cotton ball and occasionally bring it to their nose; this method should not be used for children.

To inhale steam , fill a bowl with hot water and add a few drops of essential oil. Hold the bowl about 20 cm from your nose, lean your head forward, cover your head and the bowl with a towel, and breathe deeply. The warmth and aroma of the essential oil will help relax your nasal passages and airways, reducing congestion and coughing.

A diffuser or steam humidifier releases tiny oil particles into the air. Add a small amount of filtered water and essential oil, then turn on the machine; the ratio varies depending on the type of essential oil.

Which type of essential oil should you choose?

Here are some essential oils that can help relieve discomfort caused by coughing.

Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial properties, is safe, and can be used long-term. It is useful for respiratory problems such as bronchitis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Thyme oil, with its main components carvacrol and thymol, has antibacterial properties against respiratory bacteria. People with respiratory disorders such as bronchitis and whooping cough can use this oil.

Rosemary oil is rich in cineole, which has many of the same benefits as eucalyptus oil. Rosemary's scent is milder than eucalyptus', making it suitable for mild cases of bronchitis.

Lavender oil has anti-inflammatory properties and helps soothe coughs, especially those caused by asthma and bronchitis.

Cinnamon oil has antibacterial properties, which help prevent the growth of bacteria that cause respiratory illnesses.

Some essential oils are not safe for children or pregnant women, so consult your doctor before use. Do not eat or swallow essential oils; choose to buy labeled, pure products and store them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
