According to the Khmer Times, as many as 125 legislators and 11,622 commune council members registered to vote for members of the 5th term of the Senate. According to preliminary results from the National Election Commission (NEC), the CPP won a majority against the other three political parties – the Khmer Will Party, the Funcinpec Party, and the National Power Party – with 99.86% of voters participating on February 25th.

According to Mr. Prach Chan, Chairman of the NEC, the Senate election was held in a peaceful atmosphere, without violence or any obstruction.

While awaiting official results, CPP spokesperson Sok Eysan said it was a “resounding victory” for the CPP, securing “more than 50 seats out of 58.” After casting his vote at Preah Sisowath High School in Phnom Penh on the morning of February 25, Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the four parties contesting the 5th Senate election had conducted “freely, fairly, and transparently in a harmonious and non-violent environment.”

Meanwhile, CPP Chairman and former Prime Minister Hun Sen cast his vote in Takhmao city, Kandal province. With the CPP's victory, Hun Sen is expected to become the President of the Senate. According to the NEC, the official results of the Senate election will be available in the coming weeks.

The Cambodian Senate has 62 seats, equivalent to 50% of the current National Assembly's seats. Senate elections in Cambodia are conducted through a non-universal suffrage system, with 58 senators elected through votes from incumbent National Assembly members and commune/ward council members. Of the remaining 4 seats, 2 are appointed by the King of Cambodia and 2 are nominated by the National Assembly through a confidence vote process.
