Cultural and historical tourism is a prominent strength of Dien Bien tourism - a historical land associated with the Dien Bien Phu victory that "shook the world and resonated across continents".

Historical sites such as A1 Hill, De Castries Tunnel, the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument, the Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum, the Muong Phang Campaign Command Post, and the Temple of Heroes and Martyrs at the Dien Bien Phu Battlefield... have been invested in and renovated to meet the needs of a large number of domestic and international tourists who wish to visit and learn about history.

Besides its historical tourism strengths, Dien Bien also has great potential for health and wellness tourism with its system of hot springs, well-invested homestays, as well as ecotourism, exploring natural landscapes and experiencing the cultural identity of 19 ethnic groups.

"The Star" of the Northwest Region

Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, assessed Dien Bien as a "star" of the Northwest region with its favorable conditions in terms of air and highway infrastructure that have been and are being invested in.

Currently, Dien Bien is the only province in the Northwest region with an airport connecting to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; the road transport system connecting provinces in the region is receiving attention for investment and expansion...

To further enhance the role of Dien Bien tourism in linking and creating momentum for tourism development in the Northwest region, in 2024, Dien Bien province is honored to be selected as the host locality for the National Tourism Year 2024 with the theme "The Glory of Dien Bien Phu - Endless Experiences".

Throughout the year, there will be 169 programs and events in response, including 13 national programs and events organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and other central ministries and agencies; Dien Bien province will host 28 programs, events and activities; and 128 events and activities will be organized by 33 provinces and centrally-administered cities.

According to Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration Ha Van Sieu, the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, together with Dien Bien province, has planned to develop content for the entire National Tourism Year 2024, including researching and understanding tourism trends, attracting investment, and identifying conditions to promote Dien Bien's tourism potential and advantages.

In particular, the Vietnam National Tourism Administration is actively supporting Dien Bien in promoting tourism at many important tourism forums, events, and programs both domestically and internationally.

He emphasized: "The necessary conditions have improved significantly. This is an opportunity that Dien Bien is seizing to create a breakthrough for local tourism in particular and the Northwest region in general in the coming time."

Sharing the same view, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Trinh Thi Thuy believes that through the National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024 event, the values ​​and potential of Dien Bien tourism in particular, the Northwest region and Vietnamese tourism in general will be effectively brought together, developed and promoted, contributing to realizing the goal of making tourism a key economic sector.

Vice Chairman of the Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee, Vu A Bang, happily shared that the National Tourism Year 2024 is the most important tourism event of the year.

The organization of the National Tourism Year 2024, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024), is expected to be a significant boost for the socio-economic development in general and tourism in Dien Bien province in particular. It aims to attract investment resources for development, create new and attractive products, and contribute to the socio-economic development of the province in 2024 and subsequent years.

Mr. Vu A Bang said: “We hope that hosting the National Tourism Year 2024 will contribute to the transformation and breakthrough in the socio-economic development of Dien Bien. In particular, it will gradually enable tourism to play an important role in poverty alleviation and improving the material living standards of the people of Dien Bien province.”

With a series of 169 events throughout the National Tourism Year, according to the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Bien province, these will be key activities to promote the image and people of Dien Bien. Through this, the province will gradually realize its aspiration to become an attractive tourist destination, not just a stopover in the Northwest region.

To organize the National Tourism Year 2024, Dien Bien has made thorough preparations for important activities such as the opening ceremony; developing specific and detailed plans for each activity on a monthly and quarterly basis, continuously from January to December, in conjunction with the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.

In parallel, Dien Bien focuses on developing diverse tourism products, particularly those linked to history, such as exploring the Dien Bien Phu Battlefield, a special national historical site.

This year, Dien Bien is expected to attract approximately 1.3 million visitors.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Chuyen, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dien Bien province, in the early months of the year, the province organized many typical activities and events such as: Northwest Culture and Tourism Week in Thanh Hoa, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; the 9th Swallowtail Boat Racing Festival; the 4th National Paragliding Club Championship, 2024; the Dien Bien Province Tourism Promotion Conference in Muong Lay town and the Dien Bien Phu Cherry Blossom Festival 2024...

Organizing these activities has contributed to bringing the number of tourists to Dien Bien in the first two months of the year to 400,000, generating revenue of over 400 billion VND. These are positive signs, helping Dien Bien achieve its goal of welcoming and serving more than 1.3 million tourists this year.
