(CT) - The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province has just reported on the recent damage to farmed crabs. Accordingly, from the beginning of 2023 until now, farmed crabs of people have died sporadically in some specialized aquaculture areas such as Dam Doi, Nam Can, Ngoc Hien districts, with a total affected area of more than 12,000 hectares, with a damage level of 20-60%. This is the third consecutive year that Ca Mau has discovered the situation of scattered deaths of farmed crabs in shrimp ponds. Through analyzing dead crab samples, the research team from the Nam Song Hau Fisheries Research Institute initially found that the causative agent on crabs is prominently the crustacean parasite in the crab's body cavity. While waiting for research results from the Southern Hau River Fisheries Research Institute to have effective disease prevention measures, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province recommends that specialized units at the grassroots level monitor the situation, propagate, and guide farmers to coordinate with specialized forces to handle when detecting diseases. Crabs that have reached commercial size should be harvested when they are found to be sick or dead to limit damage. When dead crabs are found in the farm, they should be collected, buried, and treated with lime or chlorine to avoid spreading pathogens to the surrounding area. The farming season should be cut, no more seeds should be released, and the farming area should be renovated to avoid recurrence of the disease. When conditions are met, good, large, quality seeds should be selected, and the seed should be released at a density of 0.2-0.5/m2, the time to add seeds for the next time is 2-2.5 months, and the stocking density for the secondary farming season is half of the main crop.
Ca Mau currently has more than 250,000 hectares of crab farming, the largest crab farming area in the country, with an estimated total output of about 25,000 tons/year, and a total value of about 10,000 billion VND.
