Doctors at Hai Phong - Vinh Bao International General Hospital have successfully performed surgery on an elderly female patient suffering from two severe conditions simultaneously: a massive hydronephrosis of the right kidney with complete loss of function and grade IV genital prolapse accompanied by bladder prolapse.
Ms. Ng.Th.D. (born in 1957 in Tan Tien commune, Hung Yen province) has suffered from a long-term illness and has consulted many medical facilities, but surgery has not been recommended due to her advanced age, complex physical condition, and numerous accompanying risk factors.
According to the patient, the genital prolapse had been present for many years. The prolapsed mass frequently protruded from the vagina, causing significant difficulties in daily life.
Upon examination at the hospital, in addition to genital prolapse, doctors discovered through examination and paraclinical tests that the patient's right kidney was severely hydronephrotic due to prolonged ureteral obstruction.

The CT scan results showed that the entire right renal pelvis was greatly dilated, forming a fluid mass occupying half of the right abdominal cavity and compressing adjacent organs.
Faced with a patient suffering from two conditions simultaneously belonging to two different specialties, Hai Phong - Vinh Bao International General Hospital held an interdisciplinary consultation and agreed to perform laparoscopic surgery under a single anesthesia session to treat both conditions at the same time.
The surgery lasted nearly 3 hours and involved the collaboration of various specialists. During the procedure, doctors drained more than 3 liters of fluid from the diseased kidney. The remaining renal parenchyma was very thin, almost completely destroyed, and no longer functional for blood filtration.
The surgical team completely removed the hydronephrotic, non-functional right kidney along with the right ureter, and simultaneously treated the grade IV genital prolapse and bladder prolapse by suspending the uterus to the anterior abdominal wall.
Two days after surgery, the patient was able to walk and eat normally, the drainage tube was removed early, and the laparoscopic incisions healed well. Currently, the patient's health is stable and they continue to be monitored and cared for according to the treatment protocol.
According to doctors, multidisciplinary collaboration allows patients to receive a comprehensive assessment, reduces the need for multiple separate surgeries, lowers the risk of complications, and shortens treatment and recovery time.
