Successful liver transplant from wife to husband

This morning, November 7, 108 Military Central Hospital (108 Hospital) announced that the unit had just successfully performed its 300th liver transplant. The liver donor was the wife of the transplant patient.

According to Hospital 108, the male patient (51 years old) was previously diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma and underwent laparoscopic left hepatic lobectomy. The patient had a history of hepatitis B, continuous treatment for 25 years, and type 2 diabetes. After surgery, the patient's health was stable and he had regular check-ups.

Recently, the patient went for a check-up and discovered two recurring tumors in segment 8, so after consultation, the doctors determined that a liver transplant was the best treatment option for the patient.

Doctors at Hospital 108 performed the 300th liver transplant.

Upon hearing the news, the wife did not hesitate to donate part of her liver to save her husband. After a comprehensive examination, evaluation, and consultation, the doctors determined that the wife's health was good enough to donate a liver.

The surgery lasted for 6 hours, the doctors performed laparoscopic surgery to remove the right liver graft from the donor, then transplanted it to the recipient. After the transplant, the couple was transferred to the intensive care unit for intensive care. 24 hours after the surgery, the health of the donor and recipient was stable, the graft functioned well.

Liver transplant technique at Hospital 108 has developed strongly.

“The 300th liver transplant is a milestone and medical achievement, the collective effort of the liver transplant team, and a touching story about the love between husband and wife and the patient's trust in the medical team at Hospital 108,” Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Quang, Deputy Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary - Pancreatic Surgery, Hospital 108, shared.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Quang also added that the first liver transplant was performed by the unit in October 2017 and was a liver transplant from a living donor (a son donated to his mother). Up to now, after 8 years, the mother's health is still stable, and the son has started a family and given birth to a normal child.
