According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, pig's stomach has the following effects:

1.1 Strengthening the Spleen and Benefiting the Stomach (tonifying the spleen and stomach, improving digestion)

Traditional Chinese medicine holds that pig stomach "replenishes organs" (using organs to nourish organs), directly nourishing the spleen and stomach (digestive system). In addition, pig stomach helps improve digestive function and absorption, supporting the treatment of poor appetite, bloating, indigestion, and weak spleen and stomach; it is often used for thin and weak individuals, and children with stunted growth due to poor absorption.

1.2 Replenishes vital energy and blood, strengthens the body.

Pig stomach is considered neutral in nature and sweet in taste. It nourishes the blood and strengthens the body; it is suitable for people recovering from illness, elderly people with weak constitutions, and women who are weak after childbirth.

1.3 Just thirst

Some ancient texts, such as Li Shizhen's "Compendium of Materia Medica," record that pig's stomach has the effect of "tonifying the middle, replenishing qi, and quenching thirst." This is useful for dry mouth and thirst caused by yin deficiency (lack of bodily fluids).

1.4 Concentration of semen, control of urination (stopping sweating, nocturia)

When combined with other medicinal herbs (such as lotus seeds, raspberries, etc.), pig stomach is used to treat nocturnal emissions, wet dreams, frequent nighttime urination, and bedwetting in children, due to its kidney-tonifying and astringent effects.

1.5 Supports the treatment of stomach ulcers (gastric pain)

In folk medicine and some traditional remedies, pig's stomach stewed with white atractylodes, lotus seeds, etc., is used to support the nourishment and recovery of the stomach lining. However, this is a supportive method and not a substitute for specific medications.

2. Some dishes and medicinal remedies made from pig's stomach.

Braised pig's stomach with herbs: This remedy focuses on nourishing and restoring digestive function, and is beneficial for those who are weak, tired, and have poor appetite due to spleen and stomach deficiency.

Ingredients: 1 fresh pig's stomach (about 500-700g), 50-100g fresh or dried lotus seeds (if using dried lotus seeds, soak them in warm water until soft), 10-15 red dates (Chinese dates, remove seeds), a few slices of fresh ginger (to remove odor and increase warmth), white wine, coarse salt, table salt, pepper, fish sauce to taste, optionally add 10g Codonopsis pilosula, 10g goji berries, and a little Job's tears.

  • Dạ dày lợn, óc lợn cũng là vị thuốc

Making:

  • Clean the pig's stomach thoroughly by turning it inside out, rubbing it repeatedly with salt and white wine (or vinegar, alum) to remove the slime and odor; rinse it under running water, and you can blanch it in boiling water with ginger.
  • Mix the lotus seeds, red dates, and other medicinal herbs (if using) thoroughly, then stuff the mixture inside the pig's stomach; do not overfill as the lotus seeds will expand during cooking.
  • Use bamboo toothpicks or kitchen thread to sew the opening of the stomach shut, or use chopsticks/skewers to secure the opening tightly.
  • Place the stuffed pig's stomach in a pressure cooker or stew pot, add enough water to cover about two-thirds of the stomach, add a few slices of ginger, and optionally a little white wine. Simmer until the stomach and lotus seeds are very tender; if using a pressure cooker, simmer for about 45-60 minutes.
  • Once the pig's stomach is tender, remove it from the pot and cut it into bite-sized pieces. The broth can be lightly seasoned with a little salt and pepper to taste.

Instructions: Consume both the fruit and the liquid, divided into 2-3 servings per day, while still warm; it is best to eat about 30 minutes before main meals or on an empty stomach for better nutrient absorption; you can use one fruit per week for about 2-3 weeks, then stop for a while to monitor results. Do not use continuously for extended periods.

Steamed pig's stomach with pepper: This is a well-known remedy for relieving stomach pain, bloating, and indigestion caused by cold (cold stomach).

Ingredients: 1 fresh, clean pig's stomach, 10-15g white peppercorns (ground or whole), fresh ginger, white wine, salt for preparation.

Making:

  • Clean the pig's stomach thoroughly using the method described above.
  • Place the peppercorns inside the stomach, and you can add a few slices of ginger.
  • Sew the opening shut or secure it with bamboo toothpicks, then place the prepared pig's stomach in a steamer or stew until tender (you can also stew it in water to make broth).

Instructions: Consume both the solids and the liquid, divided into 2-3 servings per day. Each course of treatment can consist of 2-3 pieces, spaced a few days apart.
