Quang Tri: Saving the life of a 5-day-old baby with a perforated stomach due to mother feeding rice too early

On October 27, Doctor Pham Thi Ngoc Han, Head of the Pediatrics Department, Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital (Quang Tri province) said that the unit had just successfully treated a 5-day-old patient with a perforated stomach due to his mother feeding him rice too early.

Accordingly, Baby YM, 5 days old, from A Ky village, Thuong Trach commune ( Quang Tri province ), was admitted to the hospital in critical condition with abdominal distension, difficulty breathing, and high fever. She was diagnosed with a perforated stomach and severe sepsis. Previously, the baby was born naturally at home, the umbilical cord was cut with a sickle, and she was fed rice by her mother from the very first days.

Pediatricians at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi performed emergency surgery to treat a stomach injury, administered high-dose antibiotics, and provided intravenous nutrition for 28 days. The child has now fully recovered and has been discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Han advises that newborns should be exclusively breastfed for at least the first four months. Rice, porridge, rice water, or any other solid food should not be given before six months of age. Umbilical cord cutting and care must be performed using sterile instruments and under the guidance of healthcare professionals. If the child has a fever, abdominal distension, refuses to feed, or has difficulty breathing, they should be taken to the hospital immediately for examination.
