We arrived at R'cung village, Bhalêê commune, in the border region of Tây Giang district, just as Ms. Bnướch Thị Blắc was feeding corn to her chickens at a farm not far from her house. Her garden spans over 5 hectares, filled with fruit trees, cinnamon, and a chicken farm.
Ms. Bnướch Thị Blắc said: "Now we have an orchard, a pigsty, and a chicken farm, so our economic situation is much better. When we first got married, we only raised a few pigs, which wasn't enough to make ends meet. Luckily, we also received support from the Party and the State, and guidance from officials on farming and livestock techniques. I am very grateful."
Thanks to her hard work, after a while, the herd of over a dozen pigs brought in a considerable amount of capital for Ms. Blắc's family. Along with the money she saved, she opened a chicken farm on the barren land. The flock of chickens gradually increased, from a few dozen initially, to 500, and now to over 2,000 per year.
Ms. Blắc's family raises free-range chickens, which have delicious meat and are frequently ordered directly from her farm in Da Nang and surrounding areas. Currently, she sells 3-4 batches per year, each batch containing 300-500 chickens, bringing in a substantial income for her family. With the profits from livestock and poultry farming, Ms. Blắc continues to invest in fruit tree cultivation. After 5 years, her family owns over 1.6 hectares of fruit trees, including oranges, tangerines, and pomelos.
Moreover, she adopted a long-term strategy, accumulating small profits to build a larger one. The family invested in clearing land for fruit trees and planting approximately 3 hectares of cinnamon trees. With the money saved from these sources, she and her husband invested in machinery for transportation and land leveling for their neighbors. Currently, they own two excavators and one dump truck, costing over 1 billion VND. To date, her family earns over 500 million VND annually from these economic models. Ms. Bnướch Thị Blắc has become a shining example of agricultural production for the community to learn from and emulate.
Not only the family of Ms. Bnướch Thị Blắc, but in recent years, many Cơ Tu ethnic minority households in Tây Giang have dared to think outside the box, dared to act, and dared to change their production models to rise out of poverty. In A Tiêng commune, Mr. Răđăl Nhị is one such typical household. From planting acacia trees which was not very profitable, his family boldly switched their economic model to planting fruit trees and reaped considerable economic profits.
Five years ago, Mr. Nhi mainly grew acacia trees and cultivated cassava. Since 2018, he has been researching various fruit tree cultivation models and has visited several successful orchard farming projects. Through practical observation and research into the local soil conditions, he realized that Vinh oranges have great potential, so he boldly invested in cultivating them.
“Thinking is doing, so I started by planting 100 Vinh orange trees on my family's acacia plantation as a trial. After a period of care, seeing that the trees grew well, were stable, and suited the soil, I continued to invest in planting another 100 Vinh orange trees to replace the acacia plantation. Having received training in tree care techniques, I confidently borrowed capital and expanded the area to over 5,000 square meters. To date, my family's orange orchard yields an average of 2-3 tons per harvest. After deducting expenses, the orchard brings my family 70 million VND per harvest.”
Not only has Mr. Nhi developed his own economy, but he also wholeheartedly guides other villagers in need on how to plant and care for Vinh oranges. In addition, his family's orange orchard provides supplementary income for 10 seasonal workers. By changing his production model to escape poverty and helping several households develop economically, Mr. Răđăl Nhị has been commended for his contributions to local economic development.
Mr. Tran Van Ta, Head of the Agriculture Department of Tay Giang District, said: "Thanks to support from various levels, Tay Giang District has expanded its investment in garden-based economic development, prioritizing the development of local specialty crops and encouraging the construction of value chains linking production and consumption. Over the past period, the district has allocated and integrated various capital sources to support seedlings and livestock so that people can improve their economic situation. Along with promptly rewarding and commending exemplary households, the locality has also effectively and promptly promoted, encouraged, and supported people in transforming their economic models and striving to become wealthy," Mr. Ta said.
