A group of tourists, including Juan Pinto, followed tracks on a dried-up riverbed and discovered three lions roaming in the Thornybush reserve in South Africa, Latest Sightings reported on May 20. The pride of lions unexpectedly encountered a warthog. The warthog also spotted the predators and quickly fled back to its den next to an abandoned termite mound.
When warthogs feel threatened, they will run into burrows for shelter and retreat into them. These are underground homes that they dig themselves. The burrows have small entrances, making it difficult for larger predators to get inside. Warthogs wait until the danger has passed, then emerge again.
"The lions chased after it and caught up to the den to grab the warthog that had crawled inside. They grabbed the warthog's head and began a struggle. Three lions tried their best to hold on tight and hoped to drag the huge animal out of the den," Pinto recounted.
"The battle lasted only a few minutes. The once peaceful and quiet bush became chaotic with the warthog's desperate cries. Fighting for its life, it tried to escape the lions, burrowing deeper into the den and out of their reach," Pinto added.
Unfortunately for the warthog, the pride of lions dragged it out. In just seconds, the predators had collectively killed the animal. The sudden cries ceased, and the bushes quickly returned to their original quiet state, Jinto described.
The African lion ( Panthera leo ) is the only feline species in the world that lives in prides. Male lions defend the pride's territory, while females are the primary hunters. Lions are incredibly powerful, possessing strong jaws, sharp teeth, and a robust physique. They can subdue larger prey with their hunting skills. Their prey includes antelopes, zebras, wildebeest, and many other animals.
