Retake exam due to concerns about new admission method
Leaving the exam site of the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), candidates who took the first round of this exam said the reason for continuing to take the second round. Among them, there were many candidates who had scored from 800 to nearly 1,000 points in the previous first round exam.
Thanh H. (Tran Khai Nguyen High School, Ho Chi Minh City) said he scored 830 points in the first round of the exam. Taking part in the second round of the exam, H. hopes to score 900 points to increase his chances of being admitted to the Information Technology major at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University). Thanh H. said he did quite well on the exam but had difficulty with some questions in the literature section.

Also participating in both rounds of the exam, candidate Minh Kh. (Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City), commented: "The second round of the exam was easier to identify, there were some puzzles but overall it was quite suitable for students. In particular, math knowledge tested knowledge from all 3 years of high school. The questions in part 3 tested the level of understanding, the level of application was not very demanding. I myself did not study geography, economic education and law in 3 years of high school but was still able to do this part of the exam after reading the questions carefully and combining it with information deduction".
In the first round of exams, Minh Kh. scored 884 points on the test. With the desire to be admitted to the Biotechnology major at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), this candidate said: "Last year, the admission score for this major was 864/1,200 on the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment test. This year, there are more candidates taking the exam, so it is likely that you will have to score around 900 points to be safe."
Notably, candidate Phuong Nh. (Practical High School - Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) participated in the second round even though she had achieved nearly 1,000 points in the first round exam. Explaining the reason for retaking the second round exam, this candidate said: "I wish to apply for admission to the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), which is a major with high admission scores compared to the general level. More importantly, with the innovations in the admission method this year, the common admission and the conversion of the score scale to 30, I am afraid that the admission score will be "stricter". Therefore, if I retake the exam and get a higher result, the chance of admission will be more certain".
In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City National University will recruit more than 9,200 students from the results of this exam.

"Red Army" and "Red Pants" make it difficult for candidates
After the exam, the question that caused many candidates to discuss was in the Vietnamese section. Minh Kh. said that the exam was given a passage from the Tale of Kieu (Nguyen Du) and asked about the meaning of "hong quan" and "hong quan". The candidate said that after thinking for a long time, he decided to choose the answer: "hong quan" means a soldier, "hong quan" means a beautiful girl. Meanwhile, many other candidates said that they "blindly" answered this question because they could not distinguish the meaning of the two words above.
The test consists of 120 objective multiple-choice questions, lasts 150 minutes, and is paper-based. In 2025, the test structure will be adjusted to match the 2018 GeneralEducation Program. In 2018, Ho Chi Minh City National University will organize the first competency assessment test. In 2024, the results of this test will help Ho Chi Minh City National University enroll more than 9,200 students, accounting for more than 38% of the total enrollment target.
