On August 24th, the Nghe An Department of Education and Training held a ceremony to summarize the 2025 English self-study month.

Over 270,000 teachers and students participated in the month-long English self-study program.

The English Self-Study Month, launched by the Nghe An Department of Education in June 2025, aims to make English the second language in schools. With close guidance from leaders, administrators, teachers, and the enthusiasm of students, the English Self-Study Month has yielded many encouraging results.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Head of the Secondary Education Department of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, after more than a month of implementation, the program has attracted the participation of 491 junior and senior high schools in the province with over 174,000 students (accounting for 56.65% of students in the entire province) and approximately 10,000 teachers (accounting for 66.49% of the total number of teachers).

Besides the achievements, the Organizing Committee pointed out shortcomings and limitations such as the fact that some localities still implemented the program superficially, lacking close attention from school leaders; the rate of regular student participation was uneven, and in some remote areas it was low due to a lack of learning equipment. Changes in administrative organization caused confusion in the implementation system from the Department to the schools; the new system is still being perfected, so the guidance in some localities has not been consistent.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr. Thai Van Thanh – Director of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training – expressed his gratitude to the partner organization FSEL and congratulated the schools and students for achieving high results in the 2025 English Self-Study Month campaign.

The English Self-Study Month was launched at the end of the 2024-2025 school year, when many students were preparing for their final exams, thus facing some difficulties. However, thanks to the proactive approach of schools, the eagerness to learn of students, and the advantages of the new digital-based English learning model, the education sector in Nghe An has achieved many remarkable successes. This is demonstrated by the number of students and teachers who actively and seriously participated.

According to the Director of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, the advantage of this model is that it facilitates self-learning for students in all circumstances and without discrimination or disparity between regions.

Learning English is not limited to just one month; this movement contributes to forming habits and developing self-learning abilities in English for both teachers and students, which can be maintained and further developed in the following months.

Mr. Thai Van Thanh emphasized that English will play a pioneering and leading role in accessing the world , global integration, and is an important prerequisite for improving the quality of human resources and gradually integrating into the international community.

Foreign language proficiency not only determines an individual's educational and employment opportunities but also contributes to enhancing the competitiveness of localities and the nation in the era of globalization.

In the coming period, with the goal of making English the second language, the State and the education sector have implemented many policies to encourage the teaching and learning of English in schools.

The Department of Education and Training also advised the People's Committee of Nghe An province on the Project to Enhance Foreign Language Competence, making English the second language in schools, giai đoạn 2025 – 2035. To achieve this, Nghe An province will also have specific mechanisms and policies to improve the quality of the teaching staff, invest in facilities and teaching equipment for schools, and provide students with better access to an English learning environment. The department will also conduct a large-scale survey of 5th and 9th grade students in cooperation with FSEL to ensure that students learn and develop according to their strengths and interests, with individualized learning for each student.

Following the start of the school year, the Education sector will continue to launch a month-long self-study English program and plans to diversify the forms and environments for learning English, such as clubs in schools, competitive surveys in clusters, separate skill tests, and fostering a passion for learning English so that students can confidently learn well and feel enthusiastic about the learning process.

At the end of the English Self-Study Month, the organizing committee awarded prizes to 15 schools, 220 students, and 28 teachers who achieved high results in the movement.
