On August 24, Nghe An Department of Education and Training held the Closing Ceremony of English Self-Study Month 2025.
More than 270 thousand teachers and students participate in English self-study month
The English Self-Study Month has been implemented by the Nghe An Education Department since June 2025, aiming to make English the second language in schools. With the close guidance of leaders at all levels, managers, teachers and the enthusiasm of students, the English Self-Study Month has brought about many encouraging results.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung - Head of Secondary Education Department, Nghe An Department of Education and Training, after more than 1 month of implementation, the program has attracted the participation of 491 secondary and high schools in the province with more than 174,000 students (accounting for 56.65% of students in the whole province) and about 10,000 teachers (accounting for 66.49% of the total number of teachers).
Among them, there are some schools with high participation rates such as Thanh Thuy Secondary School, Nghi Thuan Secondary School, Bac Thanh Primary and Secondary School, Que Phong Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Dang Chanh Ky Secondary School...
During Self-study Month, the number of students enrolled in the Academic English course was nearly 40,000 students; the number of students enrolled in the IELTS course was 948 students; the number of students enrolled in the English Foundation course was 303 students.
In addition to the achieved results, the Organizing Committee pointed out shortcomings and limitations such as some localities still implementing the program in a perfunctory manner, lacking close attention from school leaders; the rate of regular student participation is uneven, and in some remote areas it is still low due to lack of learning equipment. Changes in administrative organization have caused confusion in the implementation system from the Department to the school; the new apparatus is in the process of completion, so the direction in some localities is not consistent.
Promoting digital transformation in English teaching
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr. Thai Van Thanh - Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training expressed his thanks to the FSEL partner and congratulated the schools and students who achieved high results in the launch of the English Self-Study Month in 2025.
The English Self-Study Month was launched at the end of the 2024-2025 school year, many students were preparing for their final exams, so they encountered some difficulties. However, with the proactive nature of schools and the eagerness of students to learn, and with the superiority of the new English learning model on a digital platform... Nghe An's education sector has achieved many remarkable achievements. This is demonstrated by the number of students and teachers who actively and seriously participate.
According to the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An, the advantage of this model is that it facilitates students to study on their own, in all circumstances and without discrimination or distance between regions.
Learning English is not limited to 1 month, but through this movement, it contributes to forming the habit and ability to self-study English for teachers and students to continue to maintain and promote in the following months.
Mr. Thai Van Thanh emphasized that English will play a pioneering and leading role in approaching the world , global integration and an important premise to improve the quality of human resources, gradually integrating internationally.
Foreign language proficiency not only determines each individual's learning and employment opportunities, but also contributes to improving the competitiveness of localities and countries in the era of globalization.
In the coming time, with the goal of making English the second language, the State and the education sector have had many policies to encourage the teaching and learning of English in schools.
The Department of Education and Training also advised the People's Committee of Nghe An province on the Project to Improve Foreign Language Proficiency, Making English the Second Language in Schools, Phase 2025 - 2035. To do so, Nghe An province will also have specific mechanisms and policies to improve the quality of the teaching staff, invest in facilities and teaching equipment for schools, and help students access a better English learning environment. The sector will also conduct a large-scale survey of 5th and 9th graders in cooperation with FSEL so that students can learn and develop according to their strengths, interests, and individualize each student.
After the opening of the school year, the Education sector will continue to launch the English self-study month and plan to diversify the forms and lively English learning environments such as Clubs in schools, surveying and competing in clusters, and competing in separate skills, creating a passion for approaching English so that students can confidently learn well, creating excitement for students in the learning process.
At the end of the English Self-Study Month, the Organizing Committee awarded 15 schools, 220 students and 28 teachers who achieved high results in the movement.
In the study period, 49,934 students passed the English proficiency test, reaching 87.21% of the total number of registered students. The number of students participating in courses across the province was 37,023 students, reaching 74.14% of the total number of students completing the English proficiency test.
The number of teachers who completed the English proficiency test was 5,586, reaching 92.41% of the total number of registered teachers. The number of teachers participating in the system was 4,139, reaching 74.10% of the total number of teachers who completed the proficiency test.
