The exhibitions and thematic displays at the Quang Ninh Museum over the years have contributed to reviving the cultural heritage system of the mining region, telling us many valuable messages from the past.
In the context of modern society, preserving and promoting the value of cultural heritage has become an important task through the organization of special thematic exhibitions. This form of display plays a very important role, contributing to enriching museum activities. Thematic exhibitions can explore a specific aspect that regular exhibitions cannot address, while also serving political objectives, demonstrating diversity, constant innovation, and meeting the needs of various audiences.
The Quang Ninh Museum features exhibition spaces divided into two blocks: indoor and outdoor, comprising 13 permanent exhibition spaces and thematic exhibition spaces; and exhibition spaces for Vietnamese and foreign artifacts in the conference block. Among these, exhibitions in the thematic exhibition spaces (conference block) are increasingly valued. These spaces have warm, subdued colors and lighting, making them very suitable for thematic exhibitions.
Since 2020, the Museum has successfully organized 18 thematic exhibitions and displays to commemorate major national and provincial holidays. Notable thematic exhibitions include: the exhibition of books, newspapers, fine art works, photography, and the Vietnamese Tet (Lunar New Year) space celebrating the Party and Spring; "The Colors of Culture of ASEAN Countries and Partner Countries"; "President Ho Chi Minh and the Election of National Assembly and People's Council Representatives at all levels"; and "Coal Sculpture"...
Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of exhibitions has steadily increased, with each year surpassing the previous one. Some notable exhibitions include: the thematic exhibition “Quang Ninh - Convergence and Dissemination of Heritage Colors”, “Joining Hands to Alleviate the Pain of Agent Orange Victims - Quang Ninh 2023”, “Quang Ninh - 60 Years of Construction and Development”, “Tran Dynasty Culture and Yen Tu Buddhism”, “The Colors of Quang Ninh's Intangible Cultural Heritage”, “Spring Through Folk Paintings”, “World Natural Heritage Site - Special Exhibition Jeju, South Korea”, “The Unique Coming-of-Age Ceremony of the Dao Thanh Y Ethnic Group, Quang Ninh Province”...
Furthermore, the Museum collaborates with the Faculty of Arts at Ha Long University and groups of artists from the Provincial Association of Literature and Arts to organize group art exhibitions showcasing newly created paintings and sculptures. While this activity should ideally belong to the arts, artists have chosen the Museum as a space to entrust their works. Following these exhibitions, dozens of works of high artistic and ideological value have been donated to the Museum by the artists. The Museum has also actively applied digital technology to its exhibitions, enabling visitors to easily access information related to the current themes.
One of the main tasks and solutions identified in Resolution No. 17-NQ/TU dated October 30, 2023, of the Provincial Party Committee "On building and promoting the cultural values and human strength of Quang Ninh to become an endogenous resource and driving force for rapid and sustainable development" by 2030 is to mobilize investment resources and upgrade modern equipment for art exhibition spaces, including spaces for fine arts and photography exhibitions; spaces for displaying contemporary art works; and to develop other exhibition content at the Museum.
The exhibitions and thematic displays at the Quang Ninh Museum have made a significant contribution to preserving and promoting the cultural and historical values of the locality, while also creating unique cultural experiences for domestic and international tourists.
Art researcher Phan Cam Thuong, a member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, assessed: Quang Ninh is one of the leading provinces in exhibition activities because it has outstanding architectural and artistic works such as museums. Quang Ninh can organize international exhibitions, attracting world-renowned figures to create and exhibit their works without the local government having to spend any money. Other places that want to do the same need good infrastructure, including museum and exhibition spaces like Quang Ninh, to be able to organize such events. Thanks to these works, more tourists will visit, and the image of the locality will be promoted more widely.
