Comrade Vu Van Hieu was the first Secretary of the Quang Ninh Mining Area Special Zone Party Committee. He dedicated his entire life to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation; he is a shining example of boundless loyalty to the communist ideal. The construction and preservation of monuments dedicated to Comrade Vu Van Hieu demonstrate the gratitude of the people of Quang Ninh, and also create significant historical sites for educating about revolutionary traditions.
On April 8th, the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee listened to and gave opinions on the plan to renovate and upgrade the monument to Hero of the People's Armed Forces, martyr Vu Van Hieu, the first Secretary of the Special Zone Party Committee of the Quang Ninh mining area. The current monument to Comrade Vu Van Hieu was started in late September 2016 on an area of 8,300m2 and was completed to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Traditional Day of Miners in the Mining Region - the Tradition of the Coal Industry on November 12th (1936-2016).
The monument is built in the central area of the Lan Be Park complex, the Monument to the Heroes and Martyrs, and the Provincial Youth and Children's Cultural Palace, within a cluster of cultural and tourism facilities including the Bai Chay Ferry historical site, Bai Tho Mountain, Quang Ninh Museum, the Provincial Library, the Planning Palace, and the Provincial Fair and Exhibition Center, creating favorable conditions for people and tourists to visit.
The portrait statue of Comrade Vu Van Hieu, cast in pure red copper and weighing 1.7 tons, was created by Thang Long Fine Arts and Trade Company Limited. To the right of the statue's facade are two large blocks of coal brought from the Deo Nai coal mine, where President Ho Chi Minh visited on March 30, 1959. According to sculptor Pham Sinh, the creator of the work, the statue of Comrade Vu Van Hieu is a bust, approximately 6-7 meters high (including the base), made of copper, with a base that mimics the shape of a coal seam. The statue depicts Comrade Vu Van Hieu in a posture that expresses strong determination to maintain his fighting spirit and unwavering commitment to the ideals he pursued.
Previously, in 1990, a monument to Comrade Vu Van Hieu was erected in Ha Tu ward. After the expansion of National Highway 18, the monument was moved and placed in the grounds of the Workers' Cultural Center of Ha Tu Coal Joint Stock Company, where he directly worked as a miner during the proletarianization movement. This monument is still regularly maintained and renovated.
The construction of the monument to Comrade Vu Van Hieu, marked with a plaque, expresses the deep gratitude and appreciation of the Party Committee, government, and people of Quang Ninh towards Comrade Vu Van Hieu. It serves as a means of educating the younger generation about traditions, continuing to uphold the spirit of "Discipline and Unity," and contributing to the development of the coal industry and the increasingly prosperous and beautiful Quang Ninh province.
With the goal of developing this area into a "red address" for educating the younger generation about historical and cultural traditions, and also as a new and attractive tourist destination, the Standing Committee of the Ha Long City Party Committee directed the City People's Committee to select a consulting unit to develop a plan for renovating and upgrading the structures around the monument of Comrade Vu Van Hieu. Ha Long City requested the consulting units to thoroughly research historical documents related to Comrade Vu Van Hieu's revolutionary activities in order to create a monument that is appropriate to his role as the first Secretary of the Hon Gai Special Zone Party Committee; and to design the surrounding landscape to ensure it serves future tourism activities.
The plan for renovating and upgrading the structures surrounding the monument to Comrade Vu Van Hieu will continue to be subject to public consultation before being officially approved and implemented by the relevant authorities.
