Along with the regular army, militia, and reserve forces, the coal industry's self-defense force has been established and continuously developed over the years; making a significant contribution to ensuring the safety and development of coal production in particular, and local military and national defense work in general; truly deserving the title of "steel shield" of the Quang Ninh mining region.

As a unit directly under the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group (TKV), the Military Command of Vang Danh Coal Joint Stock Company has consistently been a shining example in implementing local military and national defense work over the years. For many consecutive years, it has been a model unit in implementing the Emulation and Victory Movement of the Quang Ninh Armed Forces. In 2024, the unit was awarded a certificate of commendation by the Provincial People's Committee for its outstanding achievements.

Throughout the year, the self-defense force of Vang Danh Coal Joint Stock Company actively improved the quality of training in various areas; strictly maintained duty rosters and combat readiness to protect the unit's production and business activities. In particular, they achieved high results in competitions, sports events, and drills (second place in the self-defense force category at the Military Shooting Competition for regular army and militia forces; second place overall at the Military Region 3 National Defense Sports Competition...).

“Besides focusing on combat training, the Company's Military Command actively advises the unit's leadership on participating in gratitude and repayment movements, building new rural areas, and visiting and giving gifts to policy beneficiaries. From the beginning of the year until now, the unit has provided 49 million VND in subsidies to disabled children, victims of Agent Orange, and children in difficult circumstances; given gifts totaling 218 million VND to wounded soldiers, children of wounded soldiers, children of sick soldiers, and children of martyrs; and sponsored policy beneficiary families with 500,000 VND/person/month...” - Mr. Nguyen Hoang Dao, Deputy Battalion Commander of the Self-Defense Battalion of Vang Danh Coal Joint Stock Company, shared.

Together with Vang Danh Coal Joint Stock Company, the coal industry's self-defense forces at various units have been at the forefront of production emulation movements, maintaining high levels of training and combat readiness; mobilizing forces and resources to coordinate in protecting production, maintaining order and security; preventing and mitigating the consequences of natural disasters, preventing and combating fires and explosions, and providing timely assistance in situations when ordered or as required by local authorities. They also regularly coordinate and organize combat drills to protect agencies and units, participate in provincial and district-level defense zone drills, and carry out military and national defense tasks when necessary.

In 2024, the self-defense units of the coal industry actively participated in training with 82mm mortars, DKZ guns, 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine guns, and 37mm anti-aircraft cannons. They participated in the military shooting competition at Regiment 244, which included 14 battalions with 230 officers and soldiers; participated in the Military Region 3 National Defense Sports Festival, with individuals winning gold, silver, and bronze medals; and participated in the "Square Stars Following Uncle Ho's Teachings" game show, winning second place overall.

The units coordinated with the Provincial Military Command to conduct surveys, preliminary selections, medical examinations, and manage young men enlisting in the army, ensuring 100% compliance with local targets. At the same time, they effectively implemented policies supporting the military, such as establishing fraternal ties, visiting and giving gifts to policy beneficiaries, and providing care for Vietnamese Heroic Mothers; contributing funds to support the construction of new rural roads in Na Tao village, Dong Tam commune (Binh Lieu district) with a total cost of 1.2 billion VND.

Mr. Pham Van Khoi, Deputy Commander of the Military Command of TKV, said: In order to improve the activities of the coal industry's self-defense force, TKV directs its agencies and units to strengthen the education and training of national defense and security knowledge for all personnel; regularly consolidate the military command, the team of officers in charge of national defense work, and the commanders of self-defense forces at all levels; and ensure that the reserve mobilization force is sufficient in quantity and high in quality. The Group proactively balances the budget to ensure on-site logistics; organizes the procurement of self-defense and security uniforms, support tools, and ensures the necessary conditions. The military command at all levels proactively improves the quality of recruitment and conscription of workers; receives and cares for the stable employment of workers who have completed their military service and returned home...

The coal industry's self-defense force has continuously grown stronger, now comprising over 5,100 officers and soldiers organized into 14 battalions and 6 companies under the Provincial Military Command; and 5 companies, 20 platoots, and 3 squads under the districts, towns, and cities. This force has made a significant contribution to strengthening national defense and security, building a strong and comprehensive foundation, and meeting the requirements and tasks of protecting the Fatherland in the new situation.
