Transformation from overgrown gardens
Even during the scorching summer days, the pomelo orchard of Mrs. Dinh Thi Huong's family in Tan Thuan village, Kim Dien commune, remains lush and laden with fruit. A few years ago, this nearly 1-hectare orchard was a mixed crop with low economic efficiency. Concerned about finding a new direction to increase her income, Mrs. Huong researched many production models both locally and outside the area. Recognizing that green-skinned pomelo is a high-value crop with a stable market and suitable for the hilly terrain, she decided to convert the entire area to planting over 350 pomelo trees.
“Initially, my family was very worried because this was a new crop in the area, requiring a large investment and a relatively long waiting time for harvest. But after visiting and learning from experiences in many places, I realized that pomelo trees have great potential, so I decided to bring the variety back to plant,” Ms. Dinh Thi Huong shared about her journey with green-skinned pomelo trees.
After about 3 years of proper care following technical procedures, the pomelo orchard began to yield fruit. In subsequent seasons, the yield and quality of the fruit became increasingly stable. Currently, the pomelo orchard generates an income of approximately 300 million VND per year, significantly higher than previous crops.

In recent years, more and more households in Kim Dien commune have boldly converted their orchards and hillside land to cultivate green pomelos. From a few pioneering households initially, the area of pomelo cultivation in the locality has gradually expanded. Ms. Dinh Thi Thanh Ngan, a pomelo grower in Tan Thuan village, said that the soil conditions in Kim Dien are very suitable for the growth of pomelo trees. The hillside land has good drainage and the climate is quite suitable, contributing to the distinctive quality of the fruit.
"The pomelos grown here have firm segments, a sweet and refreshing taste, and evenly sized, beautiful flesh, comparable in quality to those from other famous growing regions. The trees also adapt well to the local climate, so people are confident in investing in long-term development," Ms. Ngan shared.
Towards a sustainable pomelo monoculture region.
Based on the practical effectiveness of the models, Kim Dien commune has identified pomelo as one of the key crops in its strategy for restructuring crop production and developing the commune's agricultural economy. According to Mr. Dinh Ngoc Loan, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of the commune, the association is finalizing procedures to establish a professional pomelo growing association with approximately 25 participating households. This will serve as a bridge to help households link production, share experiences, and support each other in the development of the model.
"We aim to develop a concentrated pomelo growing area of about 25 hectares. Once the professional association is established, people will have better access to technical advancements, safe production processes, and local economic development support programs," Mr. Loan said.
Beyond simply expanding the cultivated area, the local government is also focusing on building a brand, improving product quality, and connecting farmers to markets. This is considered a crucial factor for the sustainable development of pomelo cultivation in an increasingly competitive agricultural environment. In the coming time, the Farmers' Association of the commune will continue to support farmers through technical training courses, assistance in accessing capital, and the development of production linkage models to help them expand their pomelo cultivation area.
The successful cultivation of pomelo trees in Kim Dien commune is the result of the efforts of the local people and the support of the local government in the process of transforming the crop structure to suit the actual conditions. With a clear development orientation, the green-skinned pomelo is gradually becoming one of the key crops, contributing to increased income and creating momentum for socio-economic development in Kim Dien commune in the coming years.
