Candidates taking the Literature exam at the exam center at Nguyen Truong To High School.

Anxious with my child.

Not only is this year's high school entrance exam a milestone for 9th-grade students, but it also creates significant pressure due to the sharp increase of over 5,000 students compared to last year. This makes the competition, especially in top-tier schools and specialized classes, much more intense. Therefore, nervousness is clearly visible on the faces of many candidates before entering the exam room.

From early morning, at the examination centers, many parents brought their children to school so that they could have more time to calm their nerves before the exam. While the pressure was on the students inside the examination rooms, outside the school gates, parents also carried their own anxieties and nervousness, watching their children's every step.

Waiting for her child in front of the exam center at Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted in Hue , Ms. Hoang Thi Nua, the parent of Tran Hoang Thien Binh, a student from Khe Tre Town Secondary School (Khe Tre commune), said that she and her son had come to the city center the day before to rent a room to make it easier for him to take the exam. Binh registered to take the specialized Math exam. He is quite good at studying and confident, but he has been under a lot of pressure these past few days, constantly worried about not being able to compete with the students in the city center. Last night, both mother and son stayed awake almost all night because of anxiety.

The examination process was conducted rigorously.

Arriving at the exam site quite early, Ha Thi Yen Nhi, a student from Nguyen Dang Thinh Secondary School (Huong An Ward), couldn't hide her anxiety before entering the exam room. Yen Nhi said: “I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing, systematizing my knowledge, and practicing exam questions over the past period, but I still feel pressured by the level of competition in this year’s exam. I hope to do well in Literature to gain more confidence for the following subjects.”

Evoking emotions and thinking in the contestants.

After the first exam, at the two examination centers, Nguyen Truong To High School and Quoc Hoc Specialized High School in Hue, many candidates were excited after leaving the exam room. The general consensus among candidates was that this year's literature exam was appropriate to the knowledge they had learned, the content was relatable to students, and the time allotted was sufficient. The predicted score range is expected to be between 6.25 and 7.25 points.

As one of the first candidates to leave the exam room at the Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted in Hue, Tran Minh Bao, a student from Huynh Thuc Khang Secondary School (Phu Xuan ward), said he was quite satisfied with his performance. “I found this year's exam questions easy to understand and relatable. Although the poem's content was outside the textbook and I had never read it before, by applying my learned knowledge and my ability to interpret it, I still completed the exam quite well.”

However, not all candidates found this year's literature exam easy. Although the content was considered relatable and thought-provoking, many students still felt pressured to express their thoughts in a coherent essay. Leaving the exam room looking rather pensive, Ha Khanh Nhung, a student from Hung Vuong Secondary School (Thuan Hoa Ward), said she wasn't entirely confident with her work. "The exam questions were quite relatable, but I still struggled with ideas. I feel a little anxious after this morning's exam," Khanh Nhung said.

Candidates should review their notes after the first exam.

This year, the Literature exam maintained its familiar structure, consisting of two parts: reading comprehension (4 points) and writing (6 points). Many teachers assessed the exam as topical and in line with the innovative spirit of the 2018 General Education Program. According to Ms. Dau Thi Thu Hien, Head of the Literature Department at Chu Van An Secondary School (Vy Da Ward), this year's exam maintained a stable structure, closely following the review guidelines and curriculum. However, the exam had both openness and depth, truly reflecting the "Hue spirit" with its gentle, emotionally rich writing style, yet still requiring sharp reasoning and argumentation.

The reading comprehension section uses the non-textbook work "Talking to My Child About Grandma" by author Tuyet Nga, thereby helping to reduce rote learning. In the reading comprehension section (4 points), the questions are structured in a scientifically differentiated manner, ranging from easy to difficult, suitable for the students' cognitive levels and skills.

In the writing section, the literary analysis question (2 points) requires candidates to write a paragraph of approximately 300 words analyzing the mother's feelings. This requirement is quite suitable for a paragraph, helping students focus on exploring the depth of a prominent aspect in the poem instead of having to analyze the entire work broadly.

In the social commentary essay (4 points), the topic of "procrastination" is addressed – a relevant and educational issue for high school students. Presenting a critical perspective by elevating procrastination from a "bad habit" to a "disease" allows students to develop independent thinking and express their personal opinions from various viewpoints, ranging from agreement and disagreement to partial agreement. Through this, candidates have the opportunity to apply reasoning, evidence, and argumentation skills to clarify their viewpoints.

At the end of the first exam session, there were no violations of exam regulations at any of the 48 examination centers. In the afternoon, candidates continued with the mathematics exam in essay format with a time limit of 120 minutes and the foreign language exam in multiple-choice format with a time limit of 60 minutes.
