After completing the 120-minute literature exam for the 10th grade entrance exam on the morning of May 23rd, many candidates in Da Nang left the exam room feeling quite relaxed and felt that this year's literature exam was manageable, relatable, and not too surprising.
Many candidates predict a score of 7-9.
The exam uses material outside of the textbook – the text "The Pearl of Minh Chau" by writer Trung Sy – with a message about resilience, choices, and how people overcome adversity.
The social commentary essay question required candidates to express their thoughts on what young people need to do to confidently assert themselves in life – a topic that many students found relatable to their age group.
Observations at the Tran Phu High School examination site indicate that many candidates assessed this year's exam as being of moderate difficulty, with the reading comprehension passages and the social commentary section being relatively easy to understand.

Ho Quang Vu, a student fromFPT Secondary School, said: "The exam wasn't too difficult or too easy. Question 5 in the reading comprehension section took me the most time because I had to think about how to express my ideas within a short timeframe. The social commentary essay conveyed a message about self-confidence to affirm one's self-worth, which is quite close to the thinking of students at this age."
Candidate Ngo Thi Phuong Dung, a student from Le Do Secondary School, commented that the exam was easier than expected, with both the reading comprehension and social commentary sections being easy to understand and relatable. "I think the exam wanted to convey the message that everyone needs to be resilient and strong to pursue their dreams and assert themselves in life," Dung shared.

Candidate Nguyen Dinh Phu Tan, a student from Nguyen Van Linh Secondary School, assessed this year's literature exam as quite easy, with materials close to real life. However, question 5 in the reading comprehension section caused him hesitation and took up a lot of his time because the answer was limited to seven lines.
Leaving the exam center at Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, Vo Thi Kieu Oanh, from Hoa Khanh ward, predicted she could score around 8-9 points in Literature. According to Oanh, this year's exam was manageable; the reading comprehension section was relatable to students, while the essay question about self-confidence was interesting because it connected to the reality of young people.
"This topic suits us because many young people today are sometimes too confident or overly expressive, so it's easy to relate to and write about," Oanh said.
"That's a very cute essay topic."
Commenting on this year's exam, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hoa - head of the Literature Department at Tran Phu High School (Da Nang) - said that it was a "very lovely" exam, suitable for the context of the new city of Da Nang with students from many different areas and with varying levels of ability.
According to Mr. Hoa, the reading comprehension section uses a story with content and storytelling techniques that are relatable to students' age group, while also conveying a profound and meaningful message.
"The reading comprehension questions are quite good; they both tap into general knowledge that most students have learned and can answer, and also offer a certain degree of differentiation, requiring literary appreciation and vocabulary to express oneself," commented Mr. Hoa.

In the essay writing section, the prompt only required an analysis of the character of the former soldier, which was quite concise and did not put much pressure on the candidates. According to Mr. Hoa, this character possesses the basic characteristics of a character in a story, and the text also has many details and words for students to focus on for analysis.
"However, to achieve high scores, students need to combine content and artistic analysis with the ability to express themselves fluently and coherently," the teacher said.
Regarding the social commentary section on what young people need to do to confidently assert themselves in life, Mr. Hoa believes this is a fairly familiar topic, relatable to their age group, and connected to the reading comprehension content.
Based on the overall quality of this year's exam, I predict that the average score for the Literature subject may be higher than last year.
