The People's Committee of Kon Tum province has recently sent a document to the Prime Minister regarding the investment in the Western section of the North-South Expressway (CT.02) passing through Kon Tum province.
Accordingly, the People's Committee of Kon Tum province requested the Prime Minister to consider and allocate funds for the investment in the Ngoc Hoi – Kon Tum – Pleiku expressway project during the period 2021 – 2030 according to the approved plans.
According to Mr. Le Ngoc Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Kon Tum province, Kon Tum is strategically located at the Indochina crossroads, in the core of the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia development triangle. Kon Tum province holds a crucial geopolitical and economic position along the East-West corridor, serving as a gateway for Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar to access seaports in the Central Coast and Southeast regions of Vietnam.
According to the plans approved by the Prime Minister, including: the Road Network Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050; the Central Highlands Regional Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050; and the Kon Tum Provincial Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the Western North-South Expressway (Ngoc Hoi - Kon Tum - Pleiku section, approximately 90km long, with 6 lanes) is scheduled for investment before 2030.
According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Kon Tum province, the Western North-South Expressway (Ngoc Hoi - Kon Tum - Pleiku section) ensures connectivity between provinces in the region, linking the Central Highlands and the Central Coast and Southeast regions; facilitating connections with international border gates to Laos and Cambodia, and strengthening international connectivity within the framework of the Mekong Sub-regional Cooperation and the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia Development Triangle.
This project also promotes international trade, import and export of goods and services, linking the East-West economic corridor of the region; promotes the development of exports of goods and agricultural products of Kon Tum province in particular and the Central Highlands region in general; meets the increasing demand and leverages the advantages of strong tourism types such as cultural experience tourism of ethnic groups, highland agricultural tourism and other types of resort, exploration, and community-based ecological tourism in the Central Highlands provinces.
Previously, the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee had also sent a letter to the Ministry of Transport proposing investment in the Western section of the North-South Expressway passing through the province.
Specifically, the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee requested the Ministry of Transport to pay attention to and consider the comprehensive implementation of the Western North-South Expressway Project, with particular attention to investing in the sections passing through Gia Lai province, including: the Ngoc Hoi (Kon Tum) - Pleiku (Gia Lai) expressway section, 90 km long, with 6 lanes; and the Pleiku (Gia Lai) - Buon Ma Thuot (Dak Lak) expressway section, 160 km long, with 6 lanes.
"Investing in the aforementioned expressways before 2030 will create a high-speed transport axis connecting the western and eastern regions of the Central Highlands, and linking to the Quy Nhon Port area, as the western North-South expressway connects with the Quy Nhon-Pleiku expressway," said a leader of the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee.
