Persistently preserving heritage

As a national intangible cultural heritage, Quang Tuong art is the identity as well as a unique folk performance form of Quang people. Built over hundreds of years, the plays recount the process of founding the land and villages, national heroes... through their own unique stage art. Because of its unique values, Quang Tuong art is always a genre that is "choosy" about its successors.

However, it is very fortunate that there is a generation of young people, born in the years 1996 - 2000, who have become the successors, promoting and preserving the art of Tuong of the country. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Deputy Director of Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater, said that there are currently about 20 young actors of the unit discovered in the search for Quang Tuong art talents organized by Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater.

Tran Vu Quynh is a young girl discovered in the project Bringing Tuong to Schools, implemented by Duy Xuyen District (old) in collaboration with Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater. In 2016, Quynh packed her bags and went to Hanoi with young people from Quang Nam - Da Nang at that time to participate in a professional training environment for Tuong art.

After 4 years of studying, Quynh returned and continued to improve at Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater. Currently, Quynh and her friends - also young actors and actresses of Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater - continue to implement the program "Bringing Tuong to School" in high schools in Da Nang city.

Not only with the art of Tuong, in cultural clubs in Da Nang, it is easy to see groups of young people passionate about learning to sing folk songs, perform Bai Choi, and practice folk dance. School cultural festivals and local cultural festivals become places to sow the seeds of passion for traditional arts.

In particular, some youth groups also organize workshops to teach students how to play the monochord, bamboo flute, drums, gongs, etc. There are young people who continuously conduct tours combining traditional music , helping tourists listen to music and learn more about Da Nang culture.

"Da Nang me"

“Da Nang Tui” is a connection between art and culture and modern technology operated by a group of young people of the 9X generation of Da Nang. Established in 2017, “Da Nang Tui” has organized many exhibitions that have left special impressions on visitors. Nguyen Ngoc Thien Hieu (team leader) said that modern technologies such as AR, 3D Mapping and AI are utilized to bring multi-sensory experiences on the content platform of traditional cultural values of the land.

From “Nghe Exhibition” to “Lenh Denh”, the smallest and most ordinary stories of the city are vividly recreated, providing a multi-dimensional view of Da Nang. In particular, in 2024, the “Rong - Rao” exhibition is highly appreciated for its content quality as well as interactive experiences.

The events and exhibitions of “Da Nang Tui” attract the participation of many domestic and foreign artists, along with many volunteers. This is an opportunity to develop the creative industry, attract talents and invest in this field in Da Nang city, starting from the ideas and perseverance of young people.

Recently, efforts to make young people an important part of the heritage transmission journey have been implemented through the project “Hoi An Young Leaders Training”. This is a key activity under the project “Promoting innovation for youth and communities” sponsored by UN-Habitat and Fondation Botnar, implemented by Wemaster and HoiAnlife.

The digitization of heritage continues to receive attention when the project "Neo Choi" - proposing a digital library solution to store bai choi lyrics and a research direction to translate traditional bai choi lyrics into modern language along with an additional promotional channel for the product was awarded.

The organizers said that the project has the participation of more than 50 young people with training courses using peer-to-peer teaching methods, empowerment and teamwork. The training course revolves around equipping global citizenship thinking combined with local knowledge through the Hoi An Creative City Handbook. Young people are equipped with project management and community communication skills to turn ideas into practical operational solutions.

The journey of young people to approach traditional culture is not easy. But overcoming difficulties, more and more young people in Da Nang choose to go hand in hand with traditional culture. Heritage in the hands and hearts of the young generation will be the foundation for the city to develop sustainably and richly in identity in the future...
