TPO - Green watermelons, skillfully carved with words and decorated with Tet-related images by young people, are becoming a popular item among people in Ha Tinh.
These days, Pham Quang Thiet (30 years old, residing in Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province) is "beautifying" 200 watermelons to sell during the Tet holiday. Thiet said that he learned fruit carving during his cooking school, so he's using the Tet holiday to practice the craft and earn extra income. |
Mr. Thiet uses a peeler, a pen, and other "kitchen tools" to scrape off the green outer layer of the watermelon rind before shaping the design onto it. |
Watermelons, through the skillful use of carving knives, are quickly transformed into eye-catching shapes for display during the Lunar New Year. |
| "Over the years, the demand for carved watermelons as Tet (Lunar New Year) gifts has increased, so this year I made over 200 to serve the market. Currently, many people have already placed orders for watermelons, and I have to work day and night to meet the delivery deadlines," said Mr. Thiet. |
| These uniquely designed watermelons are becoming popular for display on fruit platters used in ancestral worship ceremonies. |
| Creating a perfect watermelon carving requires skill and dedication from each craftsman. The steps of drawing, coloring, spraying, carving, and painting to create a complete carving are all very intricate; even a slight mistake can ruin the entire watermelon. |
Watermelons decorated with unique designs and carved with dragons, phoenixes, and auspicious characters become increasingly popular as Tet approaches due to soaring consumer demand. |
