Support for disabled children

For many years, Can Tho School for Disabled Children has become a support for thousands of less fortunate children. Despite many difficulties in both facilities and human resources, this place still perseveres every day to sow the seeds of knowledge, love and belief in life for special students.

Mr. Nguyen Van Diep, Principal of Can Tho City School for Children with Disabilities, said that the school currently has 24 classrooms serving 21 classes, including one combined class for visually impaired students. The classes are divided into nine primary classes, eight secondary classes and four early intervention classes for children under six years old.

Not only teaching letters and math, teachers also open up many spaces for practice and skill training such as a library with Braille books, vocational training rooms (sewing, embroidery, cake decorating)...

Notably, the school's early intervention program has helped many children quickly catch up with the general education program, opening the door to earlier integration into society.

The school’s new dormitory is taking shape. In the meantime, the school is using eight dormitories and the multi-purpose gymnasium as temporary housing for male students. Despite the cramped and inadequate conditions, teachers are still managing to ensure at least a decent, safe roof over their heads for the students to study in peace.

Students are taught a trade.

The school currently has 39 staff members, including 27 teachers who directly teach and lead, service staff, medical staff, and accountants. The teachers not only take care of the lessons but also diligently research new methods, adjust the general education program to suit the abilities of disabled students, while still training life skills and the ability to integrate into the community.

Each student here has a special story, a destiny that needs to be protected and supported. We always hope that they will not only learn letters and calculations, but also learn how to love, believe in themselves and walk firmly in life. For us, they are not only students, but also beloved children in the big family of this school.

In the last school year, the school had 123 students: 77 were hearing impaired, 11 were visually impaired, and 35 were intellectually challenged or autistic. Each child had a different life and story, but they all shared the desire to study, play, and live like other children.

A collective birthday party was organized by the school for the children.

Here, teaching is not only about imparting knowledge but also about nurturing life skills: from self-care, communication skills, to practicing sewing, embroidery, baking...

Joy is present when a shy student dares to stand in front of the class to introduce his sewing product, or when students together carefully shape each cream flower on a lovely round cake. These small achievements are a big step forward in the journey of integration.

PKP, a first-grade student in the hearing-impaired class, shared: “I am very grateful to my teachers. Thanks to them, we can go to school, learn to read and write, learn a trade, and have fun like other children. Every day we go to class, we feel like we are in a second home, where our parents always love and support us.”

Mr. Le Thanh Hai graduated with a degree in information technology from a university in Can Tho in 2010. He was then admitted to the City School for Children with Disabilities.

The first days were really difficult for him. How to help students get familiar with computers. How to help visually impaired students use computers proficiently - Those questions kept nagging at him, and he found the answer: He had to be persistent.

Children regularly participate in extracurricular activities.

First, he persevered in learning sign language so that he could teach the deaf-mute children. Then, he studied software so that the blind children could also use computers easily. It took him nearly 2 years of effort to be able to communicate normally with the children.

The work here is sometimes really hard. It takes a lot of time for the children to understand the lessons. But the more I do it, the more I understand the meaning of my work and love them more. When they graduate, I always feel choked up. There is nothing happier than knowing that they have a good life.

Along with teaching and learning, the school also maintains many movement activities such as arts, sports , exchanges... so that students can confidently express themselves.

Teachers are strict in discipline, but still gently nurture morality and personality for students. The job of a homeroom teacher is not only management but also a bridge between family and school, helping parents better understand how to accompany their children.

Behind these achievements, there are still many difficulties when the facilities are not synchronized, the dormitories are not completed. Teaching equipment for disabled children is still lacking, while that is the decisive factor in learning effectiveness.

The teaching staff is thin, the work pressure is high, many teachers are in charge of both teaching and management and union work.

However, entering the new school year, the school has clearly defined its direction: Continuing the movement "Teach well - Learn well", promoting moral education, life skills, and applying information technology in teaching.

The teaching staff is further trained to improve their expertise, and the school also seeks support from the government, social organizations, parents and the community to improve facilities and soon put the new dormitory into use.

With vocational training at school, students have more provisions for life.

Through many difficulties, Can Tho School for Disabled Children has always been a humane support for the less fortunate. There, every class, every extracurricular activity, every student's smile is proof that love has the power to overcome all barriers.

With the dedication of teachers, the support of family and community, this school will always be a place to sow seeds of hope, giving wings to special green shoots to grow firmly and confidently step into life.
