Many schools in Nghe An postpone school opening due to storm No. 5

Due to the forecast impact of storm No. 5 (storm Kajiki), many schools in Nghe An have announced to postpone the school opening on the morning of August 25.

On the morning of August 24, parents of students at Ben Thuy Primary School, Truong Vinh Ward, Nghe An received a notice: to ensure student safety, the school will postpone the school opening date on August 25.

Previously, according to the school opening plan scheduled for August 25, students and teachers of Ben Thuy Primary School returned to school after more than two months of summer vacation to prepare for the new school year, including stabilizing class organization, getting acquainted with the environment and friends, creating a mindset for an exciting and successful school year.

"Hearing the news that the storm is about to make landfall, with Nghe An being the affected area, we are also very worried about our children going to school tomorrow. The school announced the plan early to help parents feel secure in letting their children stay home to ensure safety," said Ms. Pham Huyen - parent of a 4th grade student at Ben Thuy Primary School.

Also this morning, many schools in Nghe An also announced that they would postpone the school opening date of August 25 and would move it to another day when the weather is more suitable.

In an urgent dispatch to respond to storm No. 5 issued on the evening of August 23, the People's Committee of Nghe An province requested localities and units to temporarily suspend and not organize events and activities that gather large crowds that are not really necessary during this time.

In the 2025-2026 school year, Nghe An province has more than 900,000 students at all levels with more than 1,500 schools.

According to the 2025-2026 school year schedule for preschool , general education and continuing education issued by Nghe An province, students in the whole province will return to school on August 25. The opening ceremony will be held on September 5.

Students in the whole province will finish the first semester before January 18, 2026, complete the program and end the school year before May 31, 2026.

Previously, the impact of floods from storm No. 3 (storm Wipha) at the end of July caused severe damage to the education sector in Nghe An with more than 56 schools affected, including 5 ethnic minority boarding schools in mountainous areas that were severely damaged, with estimated material damage of more than 130 billion VND.

More than 244 classrooms and 61 functional rooms need to be repaired, 15 classrooms and 80 functional rooms need to be newly built; 55 boarding rooms and 9 cafeterias need to be newly built, 18 cafeterias need to be repaired. In addition, 1,780 sets of tables and chairs, 197 computers and many other teaching equipment are damaged or washed away.

Nghe An province is focusing on overcoming the consequences and preparing for the new school year 2025-2026.
