The pillar of support for women in Pha Long

Over the years, the Women's Association of Pha Long commune, Lao Cai province, has promoted the role, responsibility, and solidarity of its members, affirming its position as a strong support for women in the mountainous region.

In response to the "Building a Family with 5 No's and 3 Cleanliness Standards" campaign, the Women's Union of Pha Long commune has actively implemented many specific, practical, and creative activities, contributing to improving the quality of life for its members. Specifically, the Women's Union of the commune directed 100% of its branches and groups to guide members in implementing the campaign in conjunction with the criteria for building new rural areas.

Accordingly, the various levels of the association organized 37 activities to disseminate information on laws and related policies, attracting over 85% of officials and members to participate.

To date, the commune has established 5 "5 No's, 3 Cleanliness" models with 150 members; 35 out of 35 branches maintain regular weekly environmental sanitation activities, attracting more than 3,800 members to participate.

A prime example is the "Clean House, Beautiful Garden" model implemented by the Women's Association of Sa Chai village. Established in 2016 with 30 members, the model has been effectively maintained to this day. The model's management board has developed specific operating regulations, organizes regular meetings to evaluate and learn from experience, and simultaneously educates and guides members on arranging and beautifying their homes and maintaining a clean and beautiful environment.

In addition, the branch actively mobilizes its members and the public to maintain environmental hygiene, sustain the clean vegetable farming movement, and commit to not letting livestock roam freely; it also periodically organizes clearing, dredging drainage ditches, and maintaining a road section over 1.7 km long with more than 700 participants each year.

Thanks to this, the rural landscape in Sa Chai is becoming increasingly neat, clean, and beautiful, and the people are enthusiastic and wholeheartedly participate in building their homeland. After many years of operation, there are now 57 member households with clean houses and beautiful gardens. Typical examples include the families of Ms. Lo Diu Hoa, Ms. Lo Min Lan, Ms. Dang Thi Ghen, Ms. Lo Thi Noi, etc.

Ms. Dang Thi Ghen, Head of the Women's Association in Sa Chai village, shared: "Initially, when implementing the model, we faced many difficulties due to the limited environmental hygiene awareness of some households, and many families were not yet accustomed to keeping livestock in enclosures. Thanks to the persistent efforts of the association and the solidarity of its members, the model has gradually become well-established and has yielded clear results."

"In the coming time, we will continue to promote and encourage households in the village to participate, contributing to maintaining the title of a new rural commune and building Sa Chai village into an increasingly bright, green, clean, and beautiful place," added Ms. Ghen.

Alongside building and replicating models, the Women's Association of Pha Long commune also organizes monthly "Green Sunday" activities, integrating them with the dissemination of information about the 8 criteria of "5 no's, 3 clean's". Through this, members gain a deeper understanding of the significance of the campaign and register to help member households meet the criteria.

During the past term, the Women's Association of the commune has supported 93 households in achieving the "5 no's, 3 clean" criteria, bringing the cumulative total over the terms to 875 member households.

In addition to playing a vital role in community life, the Women's Association of Pha Long commune also focuses on supporting women in economic development, entrepreneurship, and sustainable poverty reduction.

The Women's Union has collaborated with the Lao Cai Provincial Women's Development Fund and the Social Policy Bank to facilitate loan access for its members. Currently, the total capital managed by the Women's Union in the commune is 27 billion VND, with 360 households borrowing to develop their economy and create sustainable livelihoods.

Along with capital support, vocational training was implemented comprehensively. 24 branches participated in training courses on career development and business; 89 officials and members received guidance on disease prevention and control for livestock and poultry. Notably, the associations at all levels encouraged 245 members and local people to register for tea cultivation – a key crop to increase income.

Recognizing the development of the women's association as a key task, during the 2021-2025 period, the Pha Long Commune Women's Association organized 79 activities to gather and attract 60 new members, bringing the total number of members to 2,051; the participation rate reached over 85%, of which 871 core members in 35 branches continued to be an important force in implementing the movement.

Following the merger, the Pha Long Commune Women's Association has been restructured with a large and enthusiastic membership, facilitating the effective implementation of emulation movements. In the coming period, we will focus on comprehensive digital transformation within the organization, supporting women in enhancing their digital capabilities and promoting women's entrepreneurship and innovation.
