According to a Google account support page in Hindi, the company is allowing some users to change their email addresses. “If an email address ends in gmail.com, users can replace it with another address that also ends in @gmail.com,” the page states.
This allows those who are unhappy with their login name to change it to something more suitable. However, this change seems more like adding a second address to the account than completely changing the primary email address.
Emails sent to the old address will still arrive in the inbox. Users can log into linked accounts such as Gmail, Drive, YouTube, etc., using both addresses. In fact, the old address will be set up as an alias, and all messages, photos, and other files will also be preserved.
This change has certain limitations, such as it can only be done once a year. Additionally, each account can only create a maximum of 3 new addresses (out of a total of 4); after this limit, no more can be created.
Users can still revert to their previous email addresses at any time. However, for the next 12 months, Google will not allow the creation of another new Gmail address ending in gmail.com, nor will it be possible to delete a new email address.
Google also stated that the old Gmail address will still be displayed in some cases and will not be immediately updated in older data, such as Google Calendar events created before the change. Additionally, users can still send emails from the old address, and it is safe from malicious actors.
Additionally, The Verge reports that this might cause some issues related to syncing settings and files on ChromeOS. Therefore, the site recommends that users back up their entire computer before proceeding with the switch.
Previously, Google only allowed users to change their account address if they were using a third-party email address. "If your account's email address ends with @gmail.com, you generally cannot change it," the company stated in its support.
"If this becomes true, people who created Gmail when they were young will be delighted because they probably came up with some pretty embarrassing names," one comment on 9to5Google stated.
The support page describes the change process in great detail, but the feature hasn't been officially activated yet. However, 9to5Google is almost certain that more information about this change will be available in the next few weeks. Once officially rolled out, users will be able to change their Gmail address through the "My Account" section.
