The Dalat Art Map is a project implemented since 2020 by Seven Digital Art Company Limited (Pho Ben Doi) and Behalf Studio in collaboration with the People's Committee of Dalat City, aiming for community value in the context of Dalat seeking sustainable urban development solutions and preserving and promoting its unique cultural identity. “Dalat Art Map is part of the “Dalat - City of Art” project, a community project initiated with the goal of positioning Dalat as one of the outstanding cultural and artistic tourist destinations domestically and internationally,” said Nguyen Trung Hien, founder of Pho Ben Doi.
The publication consists of two sides: a map and information. The map's representations include natural environments (lakes, streams, parks, green spaces, etc.) and public works (bridges, roads, landmarks, functional spaces, etc.), accompanied by a legend presented in a simple and easy-to-understand manner for a wide range of users. The map provides over 60 destinations in the central area of Da Lat city and some surrounding areas, categorized into eight groups according to purpose of visit, such as historical and heritage sites, natural landscapes, exhibition spaces and art venues, music and entertainment destinations, etc. Accompanying the location information is carefully selected, interesting information, aiming to provide visitors with a comprehensive overview of Da Lat's culture.
The information on the map is referenced from official documents about Da Lat, as well as research books and compilations, and contributions from experts in various fields about Da Lat. The map design was developed based on references from international tourist maps, ensuring the product is always up-to-date, visually appealing to users, and uses environmentally friendly materials. Dalat Art Map is designed and illustrated attractively and richly with two main colors, yellow and green, reflecting the characteristics of Da Lat as a city of nature and heritage.
The team's expectation is that Dalat Art Map will develop into a harmonious gift for tourists visiting Da Lat, combining design, art, and functionality. From the map, users can easily obtain information, directions, and opportunities to experience cultural and artistic values through attractive destinations, events, and cultural-artistic programs introduced by Dalat Art Map. “Through this publication, we hope to promote the ‘spirit of Da Lat’ to users in a natural and approachable way, inspiring them to explore the beauty of the city of a thousand flowers, the city of art, and the city of music…,” shared Mr. Nguyen Trung Hien.
Da Lat, originally a resort city, has, over 130 years of development, become a national and international tourism center, the city of the Vietnamese Flower Festival, a center of French architectural heritage, a global creative city in the field of music, and is currently being developed into a World Heritage city. The core values that create the Da Lat brand are its unique climate, natural landscape, culture, architectural heritage, and the politeness, gentleness, and friendliness of its mountain-dwelling people. These values create a spiritual uplift for artistic creation and are also resources for the development of tourism in Da Lat, the city of a thousand flowers and a UNESCO Creative City in the field of music.
According to Dang Quang Tu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Lat City, Dalat Art Map is one of three local initiatives aimed at promoting the role of culture and creativity in the sustainable development of the city. This product is not simply a navigational tool, but also a bridge between artists, art establishments, and the community; helping to reveal interesting stories about history, culture, and creativity; and simultaneously promoting the sustainable development of tourism and arts associated with the city of music.
Dalat Art Map is the first art tourism map in Vietnam, meticulously systematized and curated in terms of content, with interdisciplinary applications; promising to be not only a tourism guide but also a platform to promote local art and culture. “It’s wonderful, holding Dalat Art Map in my hands, I can grasp information, easily learn about and access cultural and artistic events, and experience creative values through destinations in Dalat,” said Ms. Le Phuong Dung from Ho Chi Minh City.
Attending the recent launch event of the “Da Lat Art Tourism Map” project, Jonathan Wallace Baker, Head of UNESCO's Representative Office in Vietnam, said that since joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of music, Da Lat has actively participated in international and regional events of the network, while also developing an action plan to fulfill the city's commitments to the network. “UNESCO is pleased to partner with and support Da Lat in building the art tourism map. This initiative contributes to shaping the city's cultural and creative ecosystem and will be a useful tool for visitors to navigate the city effectively. At the same time, this tool can support state agencies in better managing and promoting heritage and creative spaces,” shared the Head of UNESCO's Representative Office in Vietnam.
The archival value, systematic approach, and user-friendly and environmentally conscious design are the factors that help Dalat Art Map spread many messages about the beauty and creativity of Da Lat to the community. “In the future, we will continue to improve, develop, and expand this map to provide complete and accurate information about new art destinations and unique local cultural events. Dalat Art Map will become a meaningful gift on every visitor's journey of exploring Da Lat,” said Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Lat City, Dang Quang Tu, confidently.
