Every Lunar New Year, exchanging red envelopes with good wishes has become a beautiful tradition in Vietnamese culture. Today, this custom has become more novel and practical as people give each other books or seeds as gifts. Therefore, the community project "Giving Books as Gifts" was initiated and promoted with the hope of continuing the mission of promoting reading culture through the movement of giving books as gifts to relatives, friends, and colleagues during holidays and festivals. Above all, it is the hope that books will naturally become a part of the lives of every Vietnamese person, as a habit and a daily cultural practice.
At the event, from their personal perspectives, speakers and guests sincerely shared their thoughts on topics such as: what is a suitable way to give books as birthday gifts, stories of spreading reading culture from individuals to communities, and how to develop Vietnamese reading culture through practical and meaningful community activities.
Distinguished educator, Professor-Doctor Dao Van Luong expressed that the abundance of talented individuals can be attributed to the country's education system, its cultural ecosystem, and especially the crucial role of books.
“Books are the culmination of humanity's wisdom. From them, people learn not only about science and technology, life, culture, and history, but also about experiences in preserving and protecting the country. Therefore, books play a very important role. Thus, the ‘Celebrating the Age of Books’ project is a great initiative,” Professor Dao Van Luong affirmed.
During the program, discussing Vietnamese reading culture based on personal observation and experience, writer Dang Nguyen Dong Vy shared that in the past few years, she has noticed a strong movement among publishers, distributors, and authors in promoting reading. She also expressed her interest in creating more private and quiet spaces for young people to read.
"We will cultivate a reading habit through various community activities and focus on creating spaces for young people to reflect and contemplate while reading," added writer Dong Vy.
Writer Van Thanh Le frankly shared that the reading habits of Vietnamese people have improved significantly. The issue that needs more discussion is how to encourage a reading culture through community activities such as book shelves in remote areas, mobile libraries, etc., so that young people and parents can have deeper access to it.
Writer Dong Vy shared: “I hope that when children and the younger generation read a book, they will have their own thoughts and seek to verify and find the answers. The journey of reading is very broad; it is a part of life and we should never get bored or abandon that journey. And giving books as a birthday gift is a way for us to guide a child on that path,” writer Dong Vy expressed.
