On the afternoon of February 16th, the Vietnamese Engineering Corps in Abyei (Africa) announced that they are currently constructing a Smart Camp.
Starting from the third day of the Lunar New Year, the Engineering Team began implementing the Smart Camp project. The project is divided into three phases with a total of 30 modules of houses and auxiliary facilities. Currently, the Vietnamese Engineering Team has completed phases 1 and 2, and 60% of phase 3. Many modules (prefabricated housing systems) have been put into use, including office spaces, housing, a central dining hall, kitchens, a gymnasium, and toilet facilities.
It is expected that in the first half of 2024, the team will complete the remaining items: 3 housing modules, water treatment system, solid waste treatment system, repair station, generator area, solar power station, lighting system, security and surveillance system, and environmental landscaping.
In addition, the Engineering Team has been constructing a Smart Camp for the Nepalese unit at the UNISFA mission headquarters (currently, 1 out of 18 building modules has been completed). It is expected that in the second half of 2024, the Team will continue to commence the Smart Camp project for the Chinese rapid response unit.
Currently, the Engineering Corps is also deploying personnel to prepare the ground (for the construction of Smart Camp), dig canals, build embankments, and construct protective fences around the Pakistani infantry unit's barracks in the Difra area, in the northern Abyei sector. The Corps has also taken advantage of the dry season to open new branch roads and patrol routes, ensuring smooth traffic flow to support the mission's regular and emergency operations.
The Smart Barracks project at the Vietnamese Engineering Corps base in Abyei has been underway since April 2023, during the operational term of the 1st Engineering Corps. This is the most modern and advanced barracks model currently available from the United Nations.
The base includes a helicopter landing pad and a flight safety system. The electricity, water, communication, and internet systems are automated. Infrastructure prioritizes female soldiers, separating them from male personnel; toilets are constructed using new materials. From the control room, commanders can monitor electricity usage and consumption, water quality, and adjust air conditioning and lighting temperatures. A security camera system is also integrated to monitor activities inside and outside the base.
Abyei is a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan. In 2011, the two countries signed an agreement committing to withdraw troops from the demilitarized zone in Abyei and establish a joint mechanism to resolve the issue. However, to date, there has been little substantive progress between the two countries. UNISFA was established in 2011 under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1990 with the mission of protecting civilians and promoting demilitarization in Abyei. 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of Vietnam's deployment of forces to participate in United Nations peacekeeping missions. |
