Salford City are forced to enter the risky play-off round. |
In a crucial away match, Salford failed to find the net, ending the season with 81 points and sadly missing out on direct promotion to League One. Conversely, Cambridge United seized the opportunity to claim the final direct promotion spot, finishing just one point ahead of their rivals.
The result forced Salford into a risky play-off round alongside Notts County, Chesterfield, and Grimsby Town. Finishing 4th overall, the team nicknamed "The Ammies" will face Grimsby in the semi-finals, with the advantage of playing the second leg at home.
Beckham and Neville's goal now is to lead the team to the final at Wembley Stadium on May 25th. There, they could face either Notts County or Chesterfield for the last remaining promotion spot.
The failure in the final stretch only intensified the disappointment, especially considering that the legendary Manchester United duo completed their takeover of the entire club last May. This deal saw the withdrawal of former teammates from the Class of 1992 such as Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville from their roles as shareholders.
Beckham and Neville's ambition was to gain promotion to League One in their first season, before aiming for the Championship within the next five years. Missing out on direct promotion by such a narrow margin was undoubtedly a major shock for both the club's management and the fans.
