Nuno Santo was unable to help West Ham create a miracle. |
After 14 consecutive years in England's top flight, West Ham were officially relegated despite a 3-0 victory over Leeds United in the final round of the season. This result was not enough to keep the Hammers in the Premier League, as Tottenham beat Everton 1-0 to secure their place.
According to British media, West Ham's management has summoned Nuno Espirito Santo to discuss his future. The Portuguese manager is likely to leave the club after less than a season in charge.
Nuno was appointed at the end of September 2025 to replace Graham Potter. He signed a three-year contract but included a clause allowing West Ham to dismiss him without compensation if the team was relegated.
In Nuno's 33 Premier League matches, West Ham won 9, drew 9, and lost 15. The team finished the season with 39 points, the highest points total for a relegated club since 2011.
Following the victory against Leeds, Nuno declined to comment on the future. He stated that this was a time for the whole team to face the disappointment rather than discuss individual decisions.
However, the atmosphere at West Ham quickly became tense. Marrion Areola, wife of goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, publicly criticized Nuno on social media, claiming her husband was benched "for no apparent reason."

Marion reposted an image of West Ham winning the UEFA Conference League in 2023, before expressing her disappointment that the team is now playing in the Championship. She revealed that Areola had been recalled to the squad after a difficult start to the season, playing 20 consecutive games before being unexpectedly dropped from the starting lineup.
According to Marion, losing her starting position also meant Areola missed the chance to play in the 2026 World Cup with the French national team. "No World Cup this year, thank you Nuno," she wrote on her personal page.
West Ham's crisis doesn't end there. The Athletic revealed that center-back Jean-Clair Todibo also had a heated argument with Nuno after last week's defeat to Newcastle. The French player reportedly declared he would never play under this manager again, before being left out of the squad for the final match of the season.
These are seen as signs that West Ham's internal affairs are truly in turmoil after the shock of relegation. From the risk of the head coach losing his job, conflicts with players, to public criticism on social media, the Hammers are facing their biggest period of instability in years.
