On the morning of September 11th, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences), stated that two earthquakes occurred in Mang But commune ( Quang Ngai province) early this morning.
Specifically, at 1:36 AM on September 11th, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in Mang But commune, with a focal depth of approximately 8.1 km. A level 1 natural disaster risk warning was issued.
The second earthquake, measuring 3 on the magnitude of the 3rd tremor, occurred at 2:30 AM on the same day, with a focal depth of approximately 8.2 km. The natural disaster risk level was 0.
The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences is currently continuing to monitor this earthquake.
Since 2021, hundreds of earthquakes have been recorded in Quang Ngai (formerly the Kon Plong district of Kon Tum province), including some that caused widespread tremors.
The largest earthquake was the one on the afternoon of July 28, 2024, with a magnitude of 5, preceded by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake on August 23, 2022.
Mr. Xuan Anh stated that "earthquake-triggering" is the cause of the earthquakes in recent years in the former Kon Tum province.
"According to preliminary studies, earthquakes in the former Kon Tum area are predicted to continue in the near future, but are unlikely to exceed 5.5 magnitude. However, more detailed studies are still needed to assess seismic activity in this area," Mr. Xuan Anh stated.
Currently, the Institute of Geophysics is deploying 11 monitoring stations in the former Kon Tum province and conducting in-depth, updated research to assess the level of earthquake activity in this area.
In Vietnam, earthquakes of magnitude 4-5 are considered mild. When an earthquake occurs, objects inside the house shake and make noise. Many people feel the earthquake. Those outside their homes feel only slight tremors.
Generally, there was no damage or only minor damage. It was very rare for there to be moderate to significant damage. Some household items fell.
The average frequency of occurrence worldwide is 10,000-15,000 matches per year.
