Motivation for cultural preservation

- In the context of strong globalization and integration, where traditional cultural values face many challenges, tourism emerges as a force with great potential, not only bringing economic benefits but also playing a key role in preserving and promoting the unique cultural identity of each nation.

Value perception

From a deeper perspective, tourism creates unprecedented opportunities for cultural preservation. The interest and desire of tourists to explore unique and different things creates a strong economic impetus for local communities to become more aware of the value of their cultural heritage.

Mr. Ban Quy Tinh, a Dao Tien ethnic minority from Khau Trang village, Hong Thai commune (Na Hang district), said: "Previously, people cultivated terraced rice fields once a year, naturally considering it a very normal agricultural activity in the highlands. However, more and more visitors from other places are becoming 'enchanted' by the beauty and climate of Hong Thai."

Tourism activities began to develop strongly, and the district planned to turn Khau Trang into a Cultural Village. From there, each family in the village was guided on how to preserve the yin-yang tiled roof architecture, weaving and embroidery crafts, and customs and traditions of the Dao Tien people. Along with that, supporting tourism products were exploited such as cloud hunting, pear blossom viewing, and enjoying Shan Tuyet tea...

Awareness of preserving the traditional Dao Tien ethnic culture in the village has significantly increased, with many families recognizing its value. In Thuong Minh village, Hong Quang commune (Lam Binh district), people previously wished to restore the fire-jumping ritual as a spiritual belief and a unique cultural feature of the Pa Then people.

Thanks to tourism, the preservation and promotion of traditional culture in the province have been enhanced.

Mr. Phu Van Thanh, a member of the Pa Then ethnic group from Thuong Minh village, said: "Now, the fire-jumping ritual of the Pa Then people in our locality has been recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of the province. Lam Binh district is developing fire-jumping into a prominent and unique tourism product of the locality."

Witnessing the interest and admiration of tourists for the unique aspects of the fire-jumping ritual, the local people feel even more proud of their heritage. Cultural interaction between tourists and locals creates opportunities for exchange, learning, and mutual understanding, contributing to strengthening awareness of preservation and promoting traditional cultural values. Thanks to tourism, the preservation and promotion of traditional culture in the province are enhanced.

Community-based tourism and cultural experience programs are becoming increasingly popular, allowing tourists to directly participate in local cultural activities and gain a deeper understanding of their meaning and value. This not only provides memorable experiences for tourists but also helps local people become more aware of their role in preserving and passing on cultural heritage to future generations.

Besides the fire-jumping ritual, the preservation and promotion of the shared cultural values of the Pa Then people are being prioritized by the government and the local community. Teams specializing in weaving brocade, embroidery, and making traditional Pa Then costumes have emerged, adding vibrancy to this new tourism product.

Major orientation

Based on its potential strengths, many provincial Party Congresses have identified tourism development as one of the province's three breakthrough areas. Associate Professor, Dr. Duong Van Sau - a senior tourism expert (Hanoi) - affirmed that Tuyen Quang possesses all the necessary elements for tourism development. Tourism serves as a driving force for the province's cultural preservation efforts.

For example, the province has three potential community-based cultural tourism villages: Tan Lap Village in Tan Trao commune (Son Duong district); and the village dedicated to preserving traditional festivals. According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the province currently has 54 festivals, including 48 traditional festivals and 6 cultural festivals.

The provincial Department of Culture, in coordination with local authorities, is reviving the traditional rice pounding festival of the Tay ethnic group.

The province has revived many traditional festivals such as the Long Tong and Com pounding festival of the Tay ethnic group, the Fire Dance festival of the Pa Then ethnic group, the Dam May festival of the White-Clothed Dao ethnic group, and the Gieng Tanh village temple festival of the Cao Lan ethnic group. Tourism has also "revived" intangible cultural heritage, architecture, music, cuisine, and traditional crafts... such as Khau Trang Cultural Village, Hong Thai commune (Na Hang); and Na Tong Cultural Village, Thuong Lam commune (Lam Binh).

These three cultural villages include two Tay ethnic villages and one Dao Tien ethnic village, all connected to prominent tourist areas and attractions in the province. For example, Tan Lap Cultural Village is linked to the Tan Trao National Special Historical Site; Khau Trang Cultural Village is connected to the four-season tourist destination in Hong Thai; and Na Tong Cultural Village is connected to the waterway and the Na Hang - Lam Binh ecological lake area. The number of tourists visiting these three villages increases rapidly each year, promising significant future prospects.

To develop ecotourism linked with community tourism, Na Hang district is currently planning and building additional Cultural Tourism Villages in Ban Bung hamlet, Thanh Tuong commune; and Na Kha hamlet, Nang Kha commune. Lam Binh district is planning to develop additional Cultural Tourism Villages in Nam Dip hamlet, Lang Can town; Thuong Minh hamlet, Hong Quang commune; Ban Bien hamlet, Phuc Son commune; and Ban Bon hamlet, Phuc Yen commune.

Ham Yen district plans to build a cultural and tourism village in Pac Cap hamlet, Phu Luu commune; Yen Son district is building and developing a cultural and tourism village in Dong Son hamlet, Chan Son commune; Chiem Hoa district is developing a cultural and tourism village in Ban Ba hamlet, Trung Ha commune; Tuyen Quang city has prospects for developing Dum village, Nong Tien ward…

Besides preserving ethnic cultural villages, the province also actively promotes tourism. Tourism experts affirm that tourism is not just a purely economic sector but also a powerful cultural bridge. When exploited intelligently and sustainably, tourism truly has the potential to become a tremendous driving force for the preservation and promotion of traditional cultural values.

By generating economic resources and raising awareness and cultural pride among local communities, tourism is contributing to ensuring that valuable local cultural heritage continues to be preserved and passed on to future generations. It is crucial that we clearly understand this reciprocal relationship and act responsibly so that tourism truly becomes a beacon guiding the way for the enduring preservation of culture.
