The driving force behind bringing political drama closer to the public.

Political drama is seen as a fertile ground for both preserving traditional values and fostering civic spirit.

Last week, Quoc Thao Theatre staged two performances of the play "The Fiery Field," attracting a large audience. This is one of the theatrical works that evokes national pride and reminds us of the sacrifices made by generations of our ancestors for independence and freedom.

Spreading the spirit of compassion

Ho Chi Minh City is determined to develop the cultural industry as one of the pillars of its creative economy . The city has provided funding to socialized art organizations to bring political drama to audiences. People's Artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, said: "Following the success of the 1st Ho Chi Minh City Theater Festival - 2024, political dramas imbued with historical themes and humanistic values have transcended the festival's boundaries to reach a wider audience. Ho Chi Minh City has promoted programs and provided funding to bring these works closer to the theater scene, allowing audiences in suburban areas to enjoy the artistic creations of dedicated artists."

Accordingly, the four gold medal-winning works, including "The Last Delirium" (Hoang Thai Thanh Theatre), "Comrade" (Ho Chi Minh City Theatre Association), "The Fiery Field" (Quoc Thao Theatre), and "General Le Van Duyet - The Man Who Carried Nine Death Sentences" (IDECAF Theatre), will each have five free performances for the public at the following venues: An Dong Ward Cultural and Sports Service Center (formerly District 5 Children's House), Hong Lien Theatre, Ho Chi Minh City Small Stage Theatre, and Hoang Thai Thanh Theatre.

This is a practical step to ensure that political commentary works are not shelved after the festival but continue to thrive in the art world, spreading the spirit of compassion and praising the heroic achievements of the people and soldiers of Southern Vietnam during the resistance war.

More motivation to contribute

Director Quoc Thao expressed his delight: "The state's financial support is a huge boost for socialized theaters, empowering them to strive even harder in serving the public." Director Ton That Can, Permanent Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, also expressed his joy: "This support proves that the state recognizes the enduring value of political theater and accompanies artists on their creative journey. The play 'Comrade,' which recently performed at an international exchange in Busan, South Korea, and won the Creative Award, is now being promoted, which is a great joy and gives the artists who are members of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association more motivation to contribute."

From the producer's perspective, impresario Huynh Anh Tuan (IDECAF Theatre) emphasized the honor of having the award-winning historical play from the festival brought to audiences in suburban areas: "We not only performed the play at the festival but also brought it to the audience directly and received their empathy. This further strengthens the artists' commitment to their profession."

Artists assert that this policy is a true "midwife" for the socialized theater – preserving artistic values while meeting public demand. Audiences in Ho Chi Minh City also have the opportunity to enjoy major performances live on stage and meet their idols, something they previously only saw on the small screen.

The live performance atmosphere allows the public to "live" with the characters, feel the tragic breath of history, and be moved by each line of dialogue and emotion. This strategy is considered "popular with the public and in line with the artists' wishes," as it both preserves the artistic and political values of the genre and evokes a love of theater in the public.

In particular, the actors who won gold and silver medals felt proud that their roles continued to shine instead of being overshadowed. Furthermore, the Ho Chi Minh City Theatre Association proposed expanding the promotional model for works that recently won awards at the 5th National Professional Theatre Arts Festival on the "Image of the People's Police Officer" in Hanoi in 2025, including: "Deep Night" (Quoc Thao Theatre), "Another War" (Hong Van Theatre), "Sugar-Coated Bullet" (Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film Branch), and "Emotional Reunion" (Truong Hung Minh Art Theatre).

Those involved hope that these political dramas will also be performed free of charge in Ho Chi Minh City, further bringing political drama closer to the audience.

According to experts, with the support of the state, political drama is entering a new cycle of development: affirming its educational and aesthetic-orienting role while becoming an indispensable source of spiritual nourishment in community life. This is vivid evidence of a humane approach to culture, ensuring that art truly belongs to the people.
