According to The Information, Apple has asked at least two suppliers to increase production of the standard iPhone 17 by at least 30%. This move comes after a sharp increase in device orders last week.
Specifically, Apple asked Luxshare Precision, one of the two main iPhone assembly partners in China besides Foxconn, to increase daily output of the standard iPhone 17 by about 40%.
The development shows that the number of people buying the standard iPhone 17 is higher than expected. The product has a starting price of 800 USD , lower than the iPhone 17 Pro ( 1,100 USD ) and iPhone Air ( 1,000 USD ).
In previous years, the iPhone Pro has had better materials, cameras, processors, and displays. This year, the two devices share many of the screen and camera specs previously found only on the Pro line, narrowing the gap with the more expensive models.
The change shows that even Apple, which is known for luring customers to choose the models with the highest profit margins, is facing growing price sensitivity.
According to Reuters , that makes the company reconsider its strategy of maintaining growth based only on high-end models.
In addition to maintaining market share, analysts say sales of the standard iPhone 17 could impact Apple's profit margins. The decision to increase iPhone 17 production implies lower-than-usual sales of the iPhone 17 Pro line.
Before the launch of the iPhone 17 series, Apple allocated 25% of the standard iPhone 17 production, 10% for the iPhone Air, 65% for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.
In addition to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, Apple also hopes to restore growth momentum with the iPhone Air. The device has an ultra-thin appearance, targeting fashion needs in the context of users extending the upgrade cycle due to incremental improvements.
In recent years, Apple has always had a hard time with the fourth iPhone model. First, the iPhone mini line was not attractive to users, forcing Apple to switch to the large-screen iPhone Plus, but it was still not promising. That made the company switch to the ultra-thin design on the iPhone Air.
Currently, the iPhone Air is not sold in China due to legal issues related to eSIM. According to MacRumors , many customers in this country may choose the standard iPhone 17.
