What can tourists explore when they have 48 hours in Da Nang?

48 hours is just enough time to sunbathe, relax on the beach, and explore Da Nang's museums, temples, and nightlife.

Ask a Vietnamese person what they think of Da Nang, and they'll most likely praise the city's obvious advantages: sunshine, sand, and sea. While these are indeed the highlights of Vietnam's third-largest city – a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists – Da Nang has much more to offer than just expansive urban beaches and clear blue skies.

Da Nang lacks the traditional architecture of Hanoi or neighboring cities like Hue and Hoi An. However, Da Nang compensates with its close connection to nature, spacious public areas, and a culinary scene that blends beloved traditional dishes with unique innovations. All things considered, Da Nang is perhaps the most livable major city in Vietnam.

Two days is just enough time to enjoy the best that Da Nang has to offer. And the Michelin Guide is ready to help visitors discover the best things to do and, perhaps equally important, the best food this coastal city has to offer.

Da Nang beach is over 10 km long.

Day 1

Morning

Enjoy yourself like a local and head to the beach at dawn. Da Nang beach – like most beaches in Vietnam – faces east, meaning it offers stunning sunrise views, a simple pleasure that locals never miss. The beach stretches for over 10 kilometers, but for Vietnamese people, the best spots are at the end of Pham Van Dong or Nguyen Van Thoai streets. After a dip in the sea, find a nearby sun lounger and enjoy a refreshing morning coconut. Before leaving, take notice of the giant white statue of Quan Am (Guan Yin) on the peninsula to the left as you look out over the ocean.

Take a taxi and follow the coastal road south to Marble Mountains to reach one of the city's most impressive religious sites. The five elements of Eastern philosophy – fire, water, earth, wood, and metal – are represented in these five clusters of limestone peaks with marble outcrops. The mountains have been quarried for marble for decades, but today the caves house numerous temples. A must-visit is Water Mountain, which boasts over a dozen temples and several interesting viewpoints.

Lunch

After an hour or two exploring the Marble Mountains, the taxi returns to the city along the coastal road, and we enjoy a delicious seafood lunch at Bé Mặn. The Michelin inspector recommends steamed squid with ginger and scallions served with salad.

Afternoon

After lunch, head to the Da Nang Cham Sculpture Museum, the city's highlight. Da Nang gets hot during the summer months, so you should spend the afternoon in an air-conditioned museum. The focus here is on the Cham people, who have been present in Central Vietnam for centuries. The Da Nang Cham Sculpture Museum displays one of the richest and most beautifully presented collections of Cham art on the planet.

Next, head to 113 Nguyen Chi Thanh to find a trendy cluster of cafes popular with students. There are plenty of interesting options here. From there, you can walk 5 minutes north to the Dien Hai Citadel, built in the early 20th century, where you'll also find the Da Nang Museum. To be honest, it's not the best museum in the city. But it has some remarkable photos showing how Da Nang has transformed from a small fishing village into a glittering metropolis in just a few decades.

Dinner

Just south of the ancient citadel, you'll find Bun Cha Ca 109, which serves a Da Nang specialty: fish noodle soup with seafood broth, topped with bamboo shoots, cabbage, pineapple, fish balls, and crab cakes.

Day 2

Morning

You don't need to wake up at dawn this morning, but you should still start early when you arrive at Son Tra Peninsula, a vast, densely forested area. If you're comfortable riding a motorbike, rent one. Otherwise, take a taxi. First, visit Linh Ung Pagoda and admire the towering statue of Quan Am, the one you saw yesterday from the beach. Then, venture further from the city and see if you can spot the endangered brown-footed langur. Keep an eye out, and you might spot one.

Lunch

On the way back to the city, we took a detour and stopped for a light lunch at Nam Hien (Phan Thanh Street). The highlight here is banh xeo, a delicious pancake made from rice flour topped with shrimp and bean sprouts. Here, banh xeo is served with a sweet peanut dipping sauce.

Afternoon

After lunch, it's time to relax at another museum. This time, head to the Da Nang Museum of Fine Arts, a rarely visited but excellent institution with a rich collection of works by artists from Central Vietnam. Most of the artwork is displayed on the upper floor, where pieces are categorized by medium: oil, silk, sculpture... The most outstanding works are probably the lacquer paintings, crafted with meticulous techniques to create a shimmering effect. After the museum, head to the beach for one last dip in the sea and then prepare for dinner.

Cuisine in Luk Lak

Dinner

End your days with a glamorous riverside dinner in Da Nang. Luk Lak serves smart, modern Vietnamese cuisine in the city center with a variety of standout dishes, including grilled ground beef with herbs and lemongrass.

Evening

After dinner, take a stroll down Bach Dang Street and along the Han River. You'll get to admire Da Nang's colorful bridges spectacularly illuminated, including the iconic Dragon Bridge. If it's Saturday or Sunday, cross the Dragon Bridge to the east and watch the fire-breathing spire, which happens precisely at 9 PM. Afterwards, head to a riverside bar...
