The Vieng Xuan Market in Vu Ban district (Phu Market), Nam Dinh province, stretches for nearly 10km across the communes of Kim Thai, Trung Thanh, and the town of Goi.
At the market, local people introduce and promote to tourists the traditional cultural values, spiritual culture, craft village culture, and socio-economic achievements of the district in the past year, creating a foundation for socio-economic development in the coming year.
Furthermore, Vieng Market also holds spiritual significance because it is organized in conjunction with the Phu Day historical and cultural relic complex and the Vietnamese people's belief in worshipping the Mother Goddess.
At dawn on the 8th day of the Lunar New Year, thousands of visitors from all over flocked to Vieng Xuan Market to participate in the festival.
Earlier, on the afternoon of the 7th day of the Lunar New Year (February 4, 2025), visitors from all over flocked to the market to celebrate the Spring Festival and pay respects to the Mother Goddess. Many tourists visit the market every year as a popular tourist destination during the New Year. This year, favorable weather made the Vieng Market even more crowded and lively.
Similar to the Vieng Xuan Vu Ban market, the Vieng Xuan Nam Truc market only holds a single session on the night of the 7th and early morning of the 8th day of the first lunar month. Due to favorable weather, from the morning of the 7th day of the first lunar month (February 4th, 2025), a large number of locals and tourists from all over flocked to the market to "buy good luck and sell bad luck" to bring more blessings home.
Whether buyer or seller, when they come to the market, they don't focus too much on price or profit. Sellers usually don't overcharge, and buyers therefore don't haggle much.
The practice of buying and selling for good luck at Vieng Market has been bustling since early this morning.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Tran The Nam (Nam Dinh City) said: "Every year I go to Vieng Nam Truc market to choose and buy some plants and agricultural tools to bring home, hoping for a prosperous, smooth, and lucky new year. Vieng Nam Truc market has many types of agricultural tools and local products, and it's not too crowded, so I feel the atmosphere of spring excursions and sightseeing at the beginning of the new year."
The Vieng Market in Nam Truc is closely associated with the Dai Bi Pagoda, a temple dedicated to Zen Master Tu Dao Hanh. Nearby are the historical sites of Giap Ba Temple, dedicated to Trieu Viet Vuong, and Giap Tu Temple, dedicated to Princess Ngoc Hoa. Therefore, visitors to the market not only come to "buy good fortune and sell bad luck" but can also visit Dai Bi Pagoda and Giap Ba and Giap Tu temples to admire the scenery and offer prayers for good things for their families and loved ones, wishing for a prosperous new year filled with good luck, wealth, and peace.
With a wide variety of goods on display, people visiting Vieng Xuan Market all buy something to bring good luck at the beginning of the new year 2025.
