Waxy coconuts in Tra Vinh have their own festival for the first time.

On April 16th, the People's Committee of Tra Vinh province announced that the wax coconut festival will be held at the end of August 2024. The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will coordinate with the People's Committee of Cau Ke district - the locality with the largest area of ​​wax coconuts in the province - to organize the event.

This is the first time that the waxy coconut from Tra Vinh has had its own festival.

The Waxy Coconut Festival aims to honor the unique values ​​of Tra Vinh's waxy coconuts and the efforts to bring processed waxy coconut products to the global market. Through this, it seeks to raise awareness of building, preserving, and developing the brand, as well as promoting the province's internal strengths.

The event also facilitates trade, connects supply and demand, and contributes to promoting the socio -economic development of Cau Ke district in particular and Tra Vinh province in general.

The festival will feature a competition to prepare 100 delicious dishes from waxy coconut (expected to set a Vietnamese record), a workshop on the current status and potential of local waxy coconuts in Cau Ke, an exhibition of delicious fruits, a seminar on tourism in Cau Ke - the potential of the Hau River area, a trade fair, sports activities, folk games, etc.

This provincial-level event also coincides with the organization of the Vu Lan Festival Week in Cau Ke district. During this occasion, the decision of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognizing this as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage will be announced.

Waxy coconuts are widely grown in Cau Ke district, Tra Vinh province, due to the suitable soil conditions. Interestingly, not every waxy coconut tree produces waxy coconuts, and not every coconut in a bunch contains wax. Therefore, the value of waxy coconuts far surpasses that of other types of coconuts.

Only waxy coconuts, which contain no water and a thick, viscous flesh inside, meet the highest quality standards. If there is water, it will be very little and should be thick and have a sweet, refreshing taste.

Traditionally, people have used the flesh of the waxy coconut to blend with sugar, milk, or add durian or cocoa to make smoothies, or the flesh can be eaten directly.

Tra Vinh is the province with the second largest coconut growing area in the Mekong Delta (after Ben Tre), with nearly 27,400 hectares and an annual production of approximately 444 million coconuts, including more than 752 hectares of waxy coconuts (most concentrated in Cau Ke district).
