The incident occurred at approximately 9 PM on May 5th, when a young man unexpectedly fell into the Han River near the Bach Dang pedestrian street (Hai Chau ward, Da Nang ). Despite people shouting and throwing lifebuoys, the victim was unable to grab onto any of them and struggled in the water.
At that time, Mr. Tran Dai Min was walking with his wife and child near the scene of the incident. Hearing cries for help, he immediately ran to investigate. Under the dim light reflecting on the water's surface, he could only see the victim's head floating in the water. The victim was almost completely exhausted.
Min recounted that when he saw the young man sinking into the water, he was extremely worried. The lifebuoy he threw down couldn't reach the victim and was instead swept further away by the current. In that critical moment, he only had time to tell his wife before immediately jumping into the river to save the man.
The night water was freezing cold, and the area below the surface was quite dark, making it difficult to reach the victim. However, Min still tried to swim quickly towards the lifebuoy floating in the middle of the river to pull the person closer. As he approached, he reassured the victim, instructing them to hold on tightly to the lifebuoy to stay calm.
On the shore, many people continued shouting for help. Min urged people to find ropes to throw down to rescue the victim. Then, he and the victim clung to a lifebuoy and tried to move more than 100 meters towards the crescent-shaped bridge, where the water level was lower and it was easier to bring the person to shore.
In the freezing water, helping an exhausted person is no easy task. Despite this, Min managed to conserve his strength, continuously encouraging the victim and pushing the life raft closer to safety. When people above lowered a rope, he helped the young man grab onto it so they could pull him ashore first. Only after the victim was safely brought to safety did Min receive assistance in being pulled up.
Many witnesses were deeply moved by the young man's courageous act. Without Min's bravery and quick reaction, the consequences could have been much more serious.
When brought ashore, the young man was trembling, his skin pale, but he was still conscious. Immediately afterwards, the Fire and Rescue Police Department of Da Nang City Police quickly arrived to provide first aid. The officers and soldiers warmed his body, applied oil, gave him ginger water to drink, and changed his clothes to dry ones. After some time, the victim's health gradually stabilized and he was out of danger.
Mr. Tran Dai Min, originally from the Nam O beach area in Hai Van ward, has known how to swim since childhood. However, he admits he's not a particularly skilled swimmer. Nevertheless, in a life-or-death situation, he wouldn't stand by and watch others suffer.
“When I jumped in to save the person, I knew I wasn't a good swimmer. But when I saw someone slowly sinking in the river, I couldn't stand still. I just thought I had to try to get the victim to shore as quickly as possible. Fortunately, everyone helped in time, so the victim was out of danger,” Min shared.
