The EU has passed the toughest immigration law in its history.

The European Union (EU) reached an agreement on June 1st on new legislation aimed at accelerating the deportation of migrants without legal residency rights in Europe. This is seen as a major turning point in EU immigration policy and the strictest regulation in decades.

According to policymakers, the repatriation regulations will help speed up the process of getting illegal migrants out of EU territory. Currently, only about 29% of those ordered to leave Europe actually return home. EU Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner said the new agreement is an important step towards helping the EU better control who is allowed to enter and leave the bloc.

Establish repatriation centers in third countries.

The most controversial aspect of the law is that it allows member states to establish their own rules. "repatriation center" Outside the EU, migrants arrive through agreements with third countries. These centers may serve as transit points or places where migrants are expected to stay, marking a significant shift from current regulations.

Previously, migrants could only be returned to their country of origin or the country with which they had a proven connection. Under the new system, that requirement will be eliminated. Only unaccompanied minors will be exempt from deportation to repatriation centers, while families with young children may still be sent to repatriation centers.

Several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, and Greece, collaborated last March on this controversial project, while Italy has been implementing a similar program in Albania, with two reception centers accommodating fewer than one hundred migrants in total.

Tighten regulations on illegal immigration.

In addition, the new law also grants authorities the power to search the residences or related locations of illegal immigrants. This provision has been criticized by many civil society organizations because, although in many member states police still need a court warrant to enter a private home, it could encourage authorities to expand their powers.

Other measures in the law include extending the detention period for migrants awaiting deportation from a maximum of six months to two years, with the possibility of a further six-month extension, and even an unlimited period for those deemed a security threat.

Entry bans have also been tightened, from the current maximum of 5 years to 10 years in most cases, and may even be permanent for individuals deemed a security risk.

Furthermore, appealing a deportation order will no longer automatically halt the repatriation process as before. Instead, courts will consider each case individually to decide whether or not to temporarily suspend the deportation.

The law also establishes the European Repatriation Order mechanism. to help member states recognize and enforce each other's deportation decisions.

However, this agreement has faced strong opposition from migrant rights organizations and many left-wing lawmakers. They argue that the new regulations risk violating fundamental human rights, increasing prolonged detention in unknown countries, and causing families to be separated by creating an unprecedentedly harsh system of detention and deportation.

Once this law is passed by the European Parliament and officially ratified by the member states, it could come into effect as early as next month.
