The victory against Hellas Verona in the 36th round of Serie A helped Como consolidate their 6th position and secure at least a place in the Conference League. They are now only 2 points behind AC Milan in 4th place and have every right to dream of competing in the Champions League.
Como was founded in 1907 and experienced periods of prosperity in the last century. However, in the 2000s, Como went through a real nightmare. Poor management led them to declare bankruptcy twice, in 2004 and 2016.
In 2017, the club was relegated to Serie D – the fourth-tier amateur league of Italian football. There was a time when the name Como seemed destined to disappear from the Italian football map.
Light returned in 2019 when the Djarum Group took over the club, providing a stable financial foundation. But the turning point came with the arrival of Cesc Fabregas. In 2022, the former Arsenal and Chelsea star joined Como as a player-minority shareholder. Very quickly afterwards, he decided to retire from playing to pursue a coaching career.
From the dugout, Fabregas immediately created a revolution. He instilled in Como a modern, possession-based football philosophy and transformed a team with relatively unknown names into a unified force. Thanks to the excellent leadership of the Spanish coach, Como earned promotion to Serie A in the summer of 2024, ending 21 years languishing in the lower leagues.
This season, Como's fairytale continues to unfold with brilliant new chapters. They won 18 Serie A matches, reached the semi-finals of the Italian Copa America, and only narrowly lost to Inter Milan.
This unexpected success has unsurprisingly made 39-year-old coach Fabregas a sought-after target for his former club Chelsea. However, Fabregas has dismissed all speculation to focus entirely on his team at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium.
Modern football is dominated by the bottomless pockets of wealthy owners. But Cesc Fabregas' Como is telling a different story, and their journey deserves more recognition.
